I wouldn't get a fish that needed 80 and just in my personal opinion is when tropical comes into play.
As of my tank (yes yes overstocked welcome to mfk) its a 55gallon, currently waiting for funds for a temp 200gal tank, as the 210gal pool is limited in room so I cant set it up at the moment.. From then on its as much as my dream can allow.

Hi , WELCOME to FISHLORE!
I kept 2 balas in a 55 for awhile, they sure did love it when they were moved to a 125, where they can race around and play.
I think what the recommendation for, gold fish / temperate water vs. tropical warm water, has more to do with what conditions stress them, and how as fish keepers, we can help them when they get sick.
Since gold fish will be more susceptible to fungal infections at the higher temps. If your tropical fish get ick for example, and you have to raise the temp to 82 + to kill the ick the gold fish WILL be suffering.
If you keep the temp down to 75, there are some tropicals that will live there, but then THEY will be more susceptible to fungal disease. All around it is more practical to have lots of room and a tank for each.
The purest on the other hand would probably want a "theme" tank with Japanese decor for the gold fish, and like with angels, an amazon river theme...... Once again, what makes this Hobby fun...Like you say to each their own, and as you choose, so shall you learn.
