Well, yes, but I don't recommend it. Goldfish are better for a cool water tank and Balas are more tropical. I've found Goldfish types to have fubgal problems when kept for a length of time in 80 degree water. 74 is more goldfish appropriate. I kept a Comet for quite awhile but he was always sick and it finally did him in. Just wasn't meant to be tropical.

I got 3 balas in with 2 reg goldfish, and 3 fantails ( plus other roomates) Temp it 76.5 usually and they are all happy. I wouldnt go past 77 degrees for common/comet goldfish. Hope you got a big tank for them

What size tank do you have ITHURTZ, because you got a crap-load (literally) of fish in that tank. Also, it is not recommended to keep tropical fish with temperate water fish, even if they 'appear' happy, that doesn't really matter. Keeping fish from two different climates together is going to cause one or both more health problems, that is just how it is. That would be like putting a human from northern Canada right on the equator and forcing them to adapt. Sure, they'll probably adapt and live, but they'll probably stress their body by the sudden change and suffer a shorter lifespan because of it.

We don't tell people that it is not a good idea just to be typing something. There is validity to our message.

Theres always two sides to a story, it would be nonsense saying goldfish (carp) never lived in 75-80 degree water from one time or another. But being said in every information I have seen online 75 degrees is what EVERYONE is happy at. Upon the research I have done all fish meet the temp requirements of 75 degrees. I wouldnt get a fish that needed 80 and just in my personal opinion is when tropical comes into play.

As of my tank (yes yes overstocked welcome to mfk) its a 55gallon, currently waiting for funds for a temp 200gal tank, as the 210gal pool is limited in room so I cant set it up at the moment.. From then on its as much as my dream can allow.

Hi , WELCOME to FISHLORE!

I kept 2 balas in a 55 for awhile, they sure did love it when they were moved to a 125, where they can race around and play.

I think what the recommendation for, gold fish / temperate water vs. tropical warm water, has more to do with what conditions stress them, and how as fish keepers, we can help them when they get sick.
Since gold fish will be more susceptible to fungal infections at the higher temps. If your tropical fish get ick for example, and you have to raise the temp to 82 + to kill the ick the gold fish WILL be suffering.
If you keep the temp down to 75, there are some tropicals that will live there, but then THEY will be more susceptible to fungal disease. All around it is more practical to have lots of room and a tank for each.

The purest on the other hand would probably want a "theme" tank with Japanese decor for the gold fish, and like with angels, an amazon river theme...... Once again, what makes this Hobby fun...Like you say to each their own, and as you choose, so shall you learn.

Its against the law for me to have more than 1 tank. I would end up swimming all day and have WAY to many fish. One tank keeps me regulated!

MFK is MonsterFishKeepers.com

Like you say live and learn, but its been going on for years, so many more years of happyness!

OMG , ITHURTZ,

I know MFK love their monster fish, but I'm also sure NO one there would approve of keeping them crammed into a little 55 gallon tank.

If as you state you truly HAVE kept these fish together for years!!!!

3 tinfoils,
3 balas,
1 common pleco
5 gold fish
2 iridescent shark catfish

There are just no words.....

Ya they cram theres in 240's haha

The only fish I have had for "years" are 6 of the fish I listed. The rest were added in 2007 mainly april (balas) mid summer (orandas) end of the year (pangasius)

Dont worry though, Im hoping by the end of the month or at most mid feb they will have 200gal to swim around in for a bit
