| Silver Arowana Help I recently got an 8in. Silver Arowana and for some reason the fish will not eat anything that Ive given it. I'm also quite suprised that it hasnt gone after any of my tank mates which include some small blue ram chiclids and a few tiger barbs. I have tried to feed it krill, worms, crickets, and brine shrimp. I have a 75g tank with a temperature of 81 degrees(F). |

| Hi aquadude welcome to FishLore
Your thread has been moved to the Arowana section of the forum.
I don't know anything about them, hopefully one of the other members will be able to help you.
Best of luck |

How long ago did you get it? He might still be getting used to his surroundings. also, as far as i know, arowanas need a arger tank... but im not sure about that one.
Is your tank cycled?
Do you know about the nitrogen cyce?
What are your aquarium parameters?
If you could fill out your aquarium info it would help us diagnose if there was something wrong. ´d by lucy! |

| I got the fish like 1 week ago, But my tank is about a year old so its pretty well cycled. My friend borrowed my testing kit so i dont have it but i believe my parameters are ok because all my other fish seem fine. |

| HE´s probably getting used to the tank. Is he easily spooked? |

| Tony could be right about him getting used to his surroundings.
Even though your tank has been up and running for a year, you could still have issues with the water after increasing the bio-load.
It would be a good idea to rule out water problems. |

| yea I guess spooking would be the best answer because whenever i walk up to the tank to feed him, he swims away and trys to hide. Thanks guys |

| be careful when he darts. Some people´s tanks have broken because of large darting fish (bala sharks, etc) so be careful! |

| What size tank are you planning on upgrading to for your arowana? They require huge spaces since they are such active swimmers....around 400 gal. for one.
Good luck with your arowana...I hope he begins eating! |

| He might not be able to catch them. I'm not sure how mobile Arowanas are, but my Oscar is 9 inchs now and he struggles to catch the feeder guppies that I give him. As for the smaller Cichlids that live with him, he couldn't catch them if his life depended on it! |

| Hi Aqua and WELCOME TO FISHLORE!
I've had experiences with small arowanas, especially silver ones. If you're daring enough, you could hand feed it with worms or small meat. And I'd suggest having another tank for some of your other fishes like the cichlids. They might just bother your arowana especially when he is still small. Also, if you can find small frogs, your silver arowana might be able to eat it as well, but as long as the frog is smaller or as small as his mouth. If you need any other info about your arowana, feel free to ask other members or you could pm me.
Best of luck! |

Hello AquaDude and Welcome to Fish Lore. The above link may give you a little insight about your new Arowana if you haven't already seen it. Wow! 35" to 40" adult size with the life span of 10 to 20 years, amazing. Personally I would seriously consider returning him. Do you have a pond that you can move him to? I think this is another species that should not be sold for home aquariums.
Sorry to be such a downer!
Best wishes whatever you decide.

| tried hand feeding and it still doesnt work. Krill always just sink to the bottom and my bichir gets it so i think the Arowana is still gettin used to the tank. And yes i believe Im getting a bigger tank or possibly a pond to put the fish in when he gets larger |

| Hello AquaDude. Have you tried adding a few drops of garlic juice to the "presoaked" krill? It acts as a food enhancer and it may help. Try it and see.
Best wishes!

| Well aparently my arowana is a copy cat because if will only start eating the food i give it if my other fish start nipping at it first. I put some krill in my tank and it ignored it, but when other fish started taking bites out of the krill, the arowana came down and took it all. Problem solved... kinda. Oh and good advice Ken. Thanks everyone |

| Could you ask whoever had it before what they were feeding it?
You will also need a tight cover on the tank as they are strong jumpers and frequently found on the floor in the morning. One of our friends had the glass tops broken by a jumping arowana.

| HI Aquadude - I have had alot of experience with Silvers - I would say that he was just getting used to your tank. Since he has started to eat, I would suggest that you start feeding him some high protein - floating pellets (they prefer to eat at the surface) I would also suggest that you start looking for a bigger home for him now...He will probably outgrow your tank in 6 to 8 months and eat all of the other fish in the process. Something else to think about - once they start to out grow there tank they will start to jump - They are extremly fast and powerful and will jump right thru your lid - so you might want to weight it down or clamp it down with something. And one more thing, I would not suggest feeding it live food - it will make them more aggressive.
If you need anything else or have any questions, please feel free to ask. |
