New Dragon Fish (Arowana)

I'm working part time maintaining various fish tanks for companies here in town, including multiple tanks for Walter Chan, the Owner of Smitty's and various other restaraunt chains etc. Well, as a thank you he gave me a baby arowana. Right now it measures no more than 3 inches, and is in it's own 25 gallon tank.... which, according to walter, will last him a few months, maybe a year at most...but I already have a 225 gallon tank on the way which will either be used for him in the future or will house the discus and the arrowana can move into the 125 before he goes into the 225.....

pictures to come once he settles in!

I realize that, but I'm not going to put an 8 inch arowana in a 250 LOL but I'll figure it out!

yeah, it's excellent. I tattoo on weekends, and then maintain tanks during the week. Good pay, wicked deals on tanks and equipment...and a free fish! Also, for when my 90 gallon reef actually has fish in it, I can just order them through the company and then not pay an arm and a leg for a yellow tang LOL.

The 225 with tank, stand and two fluval 405s is only going to cost me about 400..... weeeeeeeoooow!

There are lots of different morphs, high reds or oragnes can go for insane ammounts of money. Mr Chan spend 2500 on an 8 inch red arowana... insane!

Arowana are beautiful fish. A friend had one that kept knocking the glass tops off and winding up in the floor. after several years he found him dead in the floor one morning where he had knocked weighted, glass tops off the top of the tank. Of course he was quite large good Luck

What species is it? If it is a Jardini then you are going to need a bigger tank eventually, silvers get 3+feet.

I have always wanted an Asian aro, but alas, they are illegal or near **** illegal in the US because of importation laws. Special licenses required an all, I have seen one once but the LFS was charging 6 grand for it and it was only a low quality red.

Any of you guys seen the Aquarama Platinum? That thing is a beast! Beautiful fish, pure white.

Worm (as I've taken to calling him) is a Silver Arowana. From everything I've read and talked to the guy at the LFS who has High Reds, Oranges etc..... He should be growing approximately an inch a month. So the 25 gallon should last him for a bit....by then I'll either have a step up 90 gallon and then later into the 225. I just have a hard time putting an 8 inch fish in a 225 gallon tank right away... AAAAAAAAND it gives me another reason for getting a 90 gallon tank

And that's probably why lots of people get them and not realize that they get that large.

Really beautiful fish.

actually they can go with alot of different fish, but they too need to be fish that get quite large. I've got a 225 gallon lined up and should be here by May, in which point of time the arowana will be with a motoro ray (or two) and some bichirs. It's gonna be planted and absolutely amazing looking LOL

I think two aros would be amazing in a big tank, if you could get hold of another one. Along with some other colorful fish of course.

Oh, I never knew what it was but the nice Chinese restaurant here had a silver one of those in an 150+ gal tank. He was a good 1 1/2', if not more, and "bunked" with a 11" Pleco. The last time I was there he was gone :-( The waitress said that everyone had been asking about him, but that he had died at the age of 15 (I don't know if that's old for this species or not). I don't know if they'll get another, but they had moved clown loaches into the tank already...

He was an amazing fish! I haven't been back since he died, tbh :-/

EDIT: I just looked up some info on them, and I guess he wasn't in a big enough tank :-( poor guy...

Aros live between 10-20 yrs, so 15 is a good age for an arowana.
