Water Storage?

I'm thinking of launching an adventure into a planted discus tank. As I'm usually on a tight schedule, I think in order to keep the fish hale and hearty, I'm going to have to keep a water storage tank so I can make quick, high volume changes - I'm thinking at least half the tank's volume in water - aka, 55 gallons or 400 pounds - next to tank.

The question is: Does anyone here do this? Care to critique this idea?

Good afternoon. I don't have Discus and my stocking list is in my signature. I have 29 gallons prefiltered, heated and treated at all times for emergencies and weekly water changes. I filter it with floss and carbon. Treat it with Amquel +, Nova Aqua + and Immune Plus. I match the same temperature in my 265g and the 29g so it's ready to go in at any time.

I also have 2 55gallon drums for hurricane emergencies.
Best of luck with your Discus. Hope you can share some photos down the line.
Ken

Nice list of fish. What kind of Silver Dollars? 265 gallon - wow. Mark me envious. How much do you have to change regularly?

Thanks for the tips

Sadly, as I live in a Brooklyn apartment, the storage tank has to pass the constant inspection of my wife. So I can't use a sterilized newspaper ink barrel. ;P

My current thought is that I have a friend who's a machinist, so I'm going to request he build me a storage tank that's 4' high by 2' in radius and I'm going to make some kind of faux decorative column where the keys/bag when we get home. I'd love it if I can find something already like that so I can just get it, as opposed to pine for the end of a construction project.....

I am imagining that it will need its own pump for aeration, heater and some kind of filtration media. I use R/O water (don't hate), so some crushed coral will be par for the course. Any other thoughts? Or am I just overthinking this?

Lately my Silver Dollars have turned into real waste machines, so I'm already stashing 5 gallon buckets around the place so I can make partial water changes twice a week, so this should be win. Then its already there to make a second when I get the second tank out here.

Thanks! I call them Common Silver Dollars. They aren't Red Hooks and they aren't Striped. When I do my water change I change 25g's every week. I like to change a little more than 1/3 every month. By doing it every week helps to keep my pH and other readings (ammonia, nitrites and nitrates) where they need to be.

I actually use a 29g aquarium for my changes. I used the barrels in the picture when I set up the 265g.

Doh! What was that? I think your wife just said you passed inspection! LOL
Have a good weekend.

A lot of people do this with discus, its almost recommended in most cases as they can control their water better during water changes. You should be fine doing this.
