protein like stuff on surface

I have developed a protein like substance on top of my tank. When you put something through the surface it makes hazy gelatin like stuff go through the water. Can you tell me what it is and how to get rid of it.

I had some like it a while back it had to do with the home made food i was giving them. What are you feeding the fish and how much?

welcome to fishlore!!! I agree with scubes and it could be the food ....also, do you have an extra airation of bubble wands or rocks to stir up the surface? thats a normal site for water thats not being moved around and it gets stagnant ..good luck!

Good morning. Great information above. Here is a link to a surface skimmer that I use.

Depending on what type of filtration you have on your tank, this works very well with hang on back (HOB) filters. Average cost $8.00 Not only does it skim the surface but adds more oxygen into the tank as well. As Shawnie mentioned, an air supply with air stone will help as well

When you have the chance, if you'd be so kind as to fill out more of your aquarium information it would be a great help and help others to help you more.

Welcome to Fish Lore and enjoy the site.

I am feeding tetramin flake foods, an algee wafers for the cory's and placo. I don't have any air stones or anything I am using ehiem bar underneath the water. I have it pointing toward the surface so it rolls it. when I clear the top it disrupts the surface all the way across then it the stuff reforms overnight usually.

I would put a air wand and a pump with check valve. This needs to circulate water better on the surface.

I put on of the tubes with smaller holes on the eheim bar and moved it up a little and the stuff went away. Thanks for the circulation tips, I didn't think of that for somereason, the suction cups had slipped down and let the bar go way below the surface
