| can I get some help on TSS ratio? Hi.last night i tried to set up a hospital tank in a 5 gallon. I only had a Tetra Safe Start container for a 30Gallon and its liquid amount is 100ml. I needed to break that down for the 5 gallon. So somehow I figured out 16.5ml for a 5 gallon. My platy showed symptoms after 3 minutes in the tank, she went up toward the surface and nose dived into the gravel bottom. Then was shaking terribly and quickly did it again. I removed her pronto and put her back into the 29 gallon. Im afraid I may not have calculated correctly. ( she went back to her old self in the 29 gallon )..my sense is the water chemicals was off. Any one good at calculating ml ratios? please.. thank you... |

| Hi Mare, I don't know that the incorrect amount of TSS would cause that.
Could it have been stress from being moved into a smaller tank?
Did you remember to add the dechlorinator? Is the pH and temp the same as in the tank she came from?
ps...I stink at math. |

ps...I stink at math. | ..hmm..would using the same water from the same sink produce the same ph? I never really thought about ph before, and frankly have not done any research on it. I only tested my ph in the beginning setting up my tanks. I'll go test it.
Also, yes perhaps it could have been stress related behavior, but would she have injured herself badly, ( i thought so ) |

ps...I stink at math. | WOWZERS lucy..thanks for that heads up I tested the 29 gallon and it was only 6.0, the 5 gallon was 7.2 ( as was the 29 gallon originally at set up ) NOW on to the ph reference and education! |

I just got in.... WOW..Im. so glad that Lucy was able to hit on the PH problem. Im like you, I pretty much only checked the PH in the beginning but after running the same tank for 2.5 yrs, I really never think about checking the PH anymore.
That poor platy. Do you have a thread going on the possible problem with her that caused you start up the QT? I really hope that you will get some help on that, I have not seen a photo of her and hoping you will post it. There are so many different fungus's as you have found w/research.
Best of luck... I know they are doing great and you have kept up maintaining that tank with that many babies in it,and actually when I think of it, you didnt have very many causalities either. I really hope you will be able to get some help on this. |

| I was just throwing some things out for you to consider.
pH fluctuations like that confuse me. I'm like both of you, I don't think I've checked mine since shortly after my tanks were set up. |

I will post a pict of her tail in a new thread on identifying this condition.. |

| for TSS answers, you cant use partial bottles (or at least thats what the manufacters say) and the reason is, you may only get a partial of the live bacteria and the rest will be sitting in the bottle....if you look on the bottle , it says does UP TO 30 gals...you cannot overdose with TSS and i have used the same bottles 3.34 oz or something to that effect, for my 5 gals many times....so im with the others that it was a ph shock ..although in your other thread, I still dont see her with a fin issue lol...my eyes are old ! |

You mean I can use whatever amount the same as I would for a 'up to 30G' as I would in a 5 G? That would make it easier if it was so. Although i was stuck with this unopened 3.34 ml bottle, the smallest they make is for up to a 15G. (I would have used it if I had the smaller bottle) thanks |

| yes you do use the entire bottle...after researching and talking with the reps, they say not to use partial bottles and not to trust leftover tss after its been opened and sitting....I cant get the smaller bottles and only can get the 3.34 size...3 of my 5 gals were cycled with that size and did fine |

If you ever want the smallest bottle of TSS, I can always pick it up for you and ship it. Its got to be way cheaper than the larger size for sure! |
