Ammonia

I'm confused here! Tested my planted 10g and got an ammonia reading of 1.0. Hurried and did a 25% wc, added Amqual+
Tested again, still a reading of 1.0 Fish are showing no signs of stress, eating very well. Snails seem to be doing well, crystal shrimp are carring eggs. What's causing the ammonia spike?
Again something new for me

Could you possibly be overfeeding your fish? Have you medicated the tank recently? Usually after a water change is done, it takes about 24 hours for the water parameters to adjust to the effects of the water change. I would test it tomorrow and see if its any better.

Good morning. I use Amquel + as well. Even though you add the Amquel + you will still get readings of ammonia until the tank recycles (mini cycle). However, the Amquel + actually turns the ammonia into ammonium which is not toxic for about a 24 hour period. It will not delay the cycle.
As to the cause I would think over feeding as well.

What test kit are you using? Could it be expired?

hi MizRamzi
looking over your aquarium info was a bit confusing, as not sure which fish is in what size tank. Is it possible that you have too many waste producers in your 10g tank and causing the ammonia spike?
Can you let us know what fish and how many of each you have at the moment in that ten gal tank? Thanks ..

Ammonia Problem

Weekly water test showing ammonia in my planted 10g, 1.0 I do 20% wc, retest, same results. Do another 20%, retest, same results. Nitrites .0 Nitrates .05 pH 7.4

I wait til today, test water and again it's showing 1.0 I change media will wait for a while and test again.

I tested other tank using the same kit and all showing .0 ammonia.

What could be causing the ammonia spike in this tank? Specially after the water change, I don't get it.

The fish however are active, feeding well and best of all my mama endler has had her babies!!!

My only deep thoughts:

Your tap water has ammonia in it.
Perhaps you have not washed your test tubes well enough.
Changing your media is probably not a good idea, since it will be housing your nitrifying bacteria, no?

This is Insane!!

What the heck? I am still getting ammonia readings of 4.0 in my 10g!!! I just did a water change. I used Stress Coat+ and nothing else.

The fish are fine! Could it be the plants? There is no decay. Nothing's dead in the tank. The babies are thriving!! A while back I added some Florish plant food, could this be causing this reading. Actually I get a high reading in my other planted tank also. It's gotta be the Florish......any way to test it?

By the way, my Nitrates and Nitrites are all reading .0, yes even the Nitrates.
