He said absolutely NOT to use any product that removes/detoxifies ammonia, nitrites, etc. So that's what I did, and all wil going very well. It's been almost two weeks and new tank (120 gallon) is about finished with the cycle. Nice and easy, five fish are healthy and growing already. | TSS should work in 7-10 days...so using the conditioner has probably slowed the progress down...although Im very glad your fishies are ok!!!
IMO , tap water conditioner should be used then wait a day and add the TSS with your fish... |

I'm thinking back on the exact schedule of startup: Set up tank two weeks ago, at that time I added water conditioner. Waited for four days (making sure all systems go with canister filter, temp, pH, etc), then added TSS. Next day I added the fish. I'm still new to all this, but I'm feeling fairly confident that this is going very well. I have all you folks on the forum to help me, and I have found a couple of local people who are excellent resources. I've also had the great benefit of some contacts at University of Florida ( Go Gators) marine research laboratories. |

| waiting a day to add fish after adding TSS , probably starved the bacteria as it had nothing for a source of ammonia to feed on...because even tho 2 weeks is a fast cycle, even 3 weeks is fast, it still should only be 7-10 days and done...we all learn alot here daily and its a great source of information... |

I told them what I had done as I stated a couple of posts above. Here's what they said. Also as stated earlier, they say it's fine to add a water conditioner for water changes (such as AquaSafe) and it won't interfere with the cycle. However, they did reiterate that products that detoxify ammonia, nitrites, etc. should not be used while trying to cycled with TSS. In a nutshell, here's what they said in the email to me:
"Hello, The expression "add fish right away" can mean within the next few days. You did everything right. Thank you for choosing United Pet Group. Sincerely, United Pet Group" Last edited by Sunshine State; May 13th, 2009 at 02:28 PM.

| Anyone else confused? lol
Here's what I am getting from these posts.
Assuming it's a brand new tank.
Set up aquarium.
Add water with conditioner.....whether it the kind detox's ammonia for 24 hrs or not.
Wait 24 hrs. (by this time the detoxifiers have worn off)
Add TSS and fish.
Do not add any detoxifiers
(no reason to because you're not changing the water)
With all that said. Using Prime or other detoxifiers have never had an effect on my cycled tanks. |

LOL but, I can say that some of TSS failures have been added with a conditioner so I was guessing on NO conditioner at the same time...to let it run 24 hours as you said...now, to add TSS and wait hours or days without an ammonia source, is what I say is a NO NO NO ....it will starve the bacteria totally ..and I cannot believe a rep would say that its ok to someone trying to cycle a tank... that info from a rep, that we would be able to trust, is getting to be as bad as our LFS lately! |
