I noticed that there is stuff floating around in my aquarium water. It's very small specks that almost looks like dust. The water isn't cloudy, there are just specks floating around in it. It's way more noticable with the aquarium lights on, but I can also see it slightly with the lights off. What is it and how can I fix it?

Yes, but there are some spots where dust could get in - it's not airtight or anything like that.

Maybe it is minerals in your tap water. I had that problem when I lived in arizona.

do you have enough surface water agitation? sometimes it can be just stagnent water...if its not, maybe its something thats effecting your fish and the deaths you have had?

I think I may have figured it out - my filter was kinda dirty on the inside of the tubing. I cleaned it out, and now we'll see if it helps.

Could it be tiny airbubbles. I've got tiny white specks in my water that kinda float around but they are tiny bubbles from the filter

My first thought was tiny air bubbles, too.
If not, then you could try adding quilt batting in the filter to get the fine particles.
It can be found in the sewing dept. in department stores like Walmart and comes in rolled sheets that you'll cut to fit.
