Nitrates for planted tank

I can't seem to get my nitrates up to 15 which is recommended for a planted tank. It is only 5 at the most.

Does anyone have nitrates at 5 with plants growing well?

Me! My nitrates are never even up to 10. I do supplement with Flourish and Excel. No CO2 though.

The nitrates don't show up because they get used by the plants before there is a chance for them to be readable by test kits.

How planted is you're tank and how over stocked are you? Nitrates at 15 is a little high but 20 is the danger zone. If you want to lower then and you can I'd suggest a few faster growing plants.

Going back to Carolina's question I struggle to get my planted 60 (uk) gal tank up to 5ppm Nitrates and that is with a 5" common Pleco, 2 ancistrus and a yet to be identified dwarf pleco in there, along with neons, plattys, dannios, mollies, guppies and honey gouramis.

How is your plant growth? Are you using ferts or injecting Co2?

Growth is fine, I have to trim the plants back every now and then to stop them taking over!

I put a plant feed grit under the substrate in the tanks and make sure when I put the plants in that I get the roots down into the grit.

I wish I could remember the name but i will look when i am back in the LFS at the weekend if it will help.

That will keep them going for ayear or so and then it will be down to putting plant tabs in to keep them going.

Carolina: Your plants will use the Nitrates as they're made. I use a liquid aquatic plant fert. called Plant grow in my tanks if I think that they need a boost. I use lauterite mixed in with my gravel.

What plants you can have will depend on your lighting.

i use flourish like PFP, most (all except one) of my tanks have bettas that don't really give enough of a bioload to keep the nitrates where they should be for plants, so i supplement with the flourish. i also have fluorite/sand substrate in one of the tanks

Well, that is a new idea to me. I mixed red bag kitty litter, sand and ferts into dirt and then topped it with flourite. El Natural style and mineralized substrate combined.

I guess from Jonah, it isn't important to establish high nitrate level.

Anacharis are quite easy to grow and good for absorbing nitrites. Their leaves have changed in my tank and now it looks like Tonia plant.

I wish I had your guys problem

My nitrates in my 60 and 70 gallon tanks is pretty much always at 25 to 30 ppm. My 30gallon with goldfish is around 50 ppm. My 10 gallon tank is around 20 ppm. The nitrates in my well water are around 15ppm I do water changes every 3 to 5 days but this is killing my septic system. At any rate good luck in raising your nitrate level if you want I could send you some water with a lot of it in there LOL......

I wonder if adding some floating plants, like anarchin or hornwort would lower the nitrates.

Just found these 2 link for lowering the nitrates planted tank forum.

Let me know if you are able to get the nitrates down and how you did it, please.
