Tetra Safe Start and carbon

Here's one for you....
Bought a bottle of TSS and the owner said to remove the carbon for 24 hours after adding. I haven't read that on here nor did I come up with any search results stating to do that. Anyone else heard of doing this? I have the danios acclamating in their bag in my aquarium. Doesn't make sense to me. The carbon isn't going to filter out the bacteria. Right?

hmm, if it doesnt say to do so on the bottle, then you can probably leave the carbon in. however, i'm not 100% sure. if you wanted to be safe, you could just remove it anyways

I did a search and found a response to that very question on the Tetra website. The confusion is the wording on the bottle. Some people are reading it as you need to remove the carbon during treatment. On the contrary, the bottle actually instructs to remove any medications/treatments VIA carbon first.

yeah, that makes sense. a lot of bacterial supplements tell you to do that because the medications can prevent the cycle from getting started/continuing/etc

you do not have to remove the carbon it wont hurt a thing..but remember carbon itself isnt something that should be left in there longer than 3-4 weeks as its lost its usefulness by that time...but you can always just put a slit in the filter and dump it out ...

I would take it out just in case. Safe starts not cheap and you dont want to risk your fish.

I used TSS in my 55 gallon with the carbon left in the canister and the tank cycled as advertised just fine in under a week.

I agree, I believe people (like me) were misreading the bottle and it appeared that you needed to remove the carbon but if you read the instructions carefully the wording is right. You don't need to remove it.
