Background Idea

I'm tired of the same ole backgrounds you tape on the back of the tank. I was checking out the 3D backgrounds but you need to use silicone to secure it. I was thinking, is it possible to use two large 24" floor tiles side by side to create a neutral (and natural) looking textured background. Since most of the tanks are around that high anyway. Or would I have chemicals poisoning the water quality. And how could I find out if the tiles have something harmful in it.
If this could work we can set a “trend”; A cheaper/nicer background!

You could use any natural tile or granite or marble, ceramic and/or porcelain tiles would be good and you wouldn't have to worry about anything leeching into the water.I don't think any chemicals are used to make them. You may need something to secure them to the back wall so they don't fall over, other than silicone,I am not sure what you could use.

I have often thought the small natural stone tiles would look good in an aquarium as a background or partial background. The same type they use on fireplaces.

The only ones to worry about would be limestone tiling, and any with calcium, sandstone,or such in them. They would alter the pH over time, but in some aquariums may be beneficial,by adding buffers as they leech out into the water. Not good for everyone, but for some it wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for the help. I'm going tile shopping after work tomorrow! I just got a 75 gal tank that I want to use for a Discuss. I bought a large piece of driftwood, I plan on transferring half my overgrown plants into the tank. A dark tile background will look nice and also bring out the colors of the discuss. Thanks again.
