question about testing for amonia

I tested my tap water for amonia and the results were 0.25. How long should it take for the tank to process that amonia? I'm trying to figure out how long I need to wait after doing a water change to test the water again.

Thanks!!

A fully cycled tank should process ammonia as it is produced (or close enough that there really is no difference). Uncycled, it will depend on how much of the nitrifying bacteria have already built up.

I have an ammonia reading in my tap water. In my cycled tanks if I do a water test right after a water change I will have a slight ammonia reading, but if I do the test a few hours later or the following day, there is no ammonia. Hope this helps

Thanks a bunch for the info. I tested 1 day after a change and got my first 0 amonia reading.
