Turkey Baster as a gravel cleaner

Hey everyone

Heard from a few people that this is a fairly cheap way to clean crud out from under the gravel, so I bought one. Should I do this while I'm doing water changes (so weekly)? Also, is there any "science" to it, or just kind of squeeze it while the noozle's in the gravel? Thanks,

Cory

You can easily just use the water change hose to vacuum the gravel. There are pretty cheap attachments that do this. They're something like four or five times the width of the hose itself. This allows the gravel to be stirred up without actually getting sucked into the bucket. This is more efficient than doing a water change and then vacuuming.

I would do that, but I just change the water by using a bucket (only a 15 and 10 gallon)

think i'd rather buy a cheapie syphon and still use the bucket... prolly not worth a python, but a syphon is cheap and would work better than a turkey baster, imo - basically agree with sir...

Thats what they are talking about. Good for bucket WC and cleaning substrate.

Cory's got exactly what I'm talking about. I only use the Python on two of my tanks. The others I still empty/fill by siphoning water into a bucket, but I still use the siphon-powered vacuums. They've been around far longer than the Python, and work remarkably well. A bonus is that the water from these changes is great to water the garden with. The waste is fertilizer.
