Water Quality & Overstocking

We have 4 White skirt tetras and a rainbow shark... A week ago my son was given a dozen neon tetras which has since pushed our tank into the overstocked range. I've a 15gal tank (according to dimensions but it takes 70litres which is closer to 18 but I am nit picking now) at the moment BUT I AM GETTING A BIGGER TANK!!! I had the water tested today for the first time since getting the neons and tests came back fine aside from phosphates in the tank which after a long conversation about what we've been doing regarding the tank and it seems I have been over feeding... It's the snails, they feed at the top of the tank and I love it! Needless to say I have overfed to encourage them to keep it up. The levels were not very high and apparently correct feeding and a good water change will fix the problem.

I've added a product called CYCLE because my son rinsed our water filter in FRESH water rather than tank water during our last water change and I worried there may be a chance my tank is going to recycle. It's been a week since that episode and no change in quality aside from the phospates which I really do believe I am responsible for things are fine... Is it true though that it can take more than a week to begin recycling and I may not see any changes yet?

So far the fish all seem to be acting normally, the neons dulled a bit when they were first added but now they're a lovely bright colour again. Another question I have is how long before I'll start seeing a drop in water quality because of the extra fish? With regard to over stocking what precisely is the major issue? Is it that the fish will be stressed without enough room or is the issue water quality... If it is quality and I manage to keep my tank in tip top shape will the fish be ok until I can get a new tank for them? If it's space can I do any thing in the interum to help the fish cope?

One Dozen Tetras Even with very frequent water changes, it is hard to keep so many fish in that tank. Not to mention that the Rainbow shark will start snacking on the Neons pretty soon. Please take the Tetras back.

Oh dear God, will he really eat them? I thought he was a herbivore! They are often in his little tunnel and he doesn't seem to mind them, gosh he's probably sizing them up! I am just going to have to hope and pray his age of 6 1/2 years will give him the wisdom NOT to gobble up the neons... I can think of MUCH better ways to die than to be someones lunch.

I would not use the Cycle product. Its going to give you false readings and mess with your cycle. Most folks here do not use that product.

G'morning
IMO your tank is going through a 'mini cycle' due to the added fish and the filter rinse. Since you have had it running for 5 years, hopefully you have enough beneficial bacteria in the tank now and it will not take long to get it back to a normal cycle. If it was just the filter media being rinsed in tap water, it would most likely take a few days. With the added fish in there now, along with the filter media mishap, you will have more ammonia in the tank and that will have to produce more bacteria to compensate. My guess is that it will probably take a week to get back to normal.
Do you have testing kit available? I would do tests more often to see where you are in the mini cycle and also to tell when you need to do a water change, which will have to be done now more than you are used to doing.
Glad to hear that you are going to get another tank.. hopefully soon for the happiness of your fish.
To answer the question whether it is a water quality issue or the not having enough room for your fish, it is both. Having too many fish in the tank will also stress out the fish. They like to be able to have the room to move around with out getting into some one else's territory where the aggression will start. Its sort of like being stuck in a elevator with too many people. You can do it for a short time.. but in the long run it sure gets stuffy in there!

Hi!

True - those neons will probably be pretty tasty for Mr.RTBS! You should really take RTBS back - they don't make brilliant community fish and as you say aren't exactly the most interesting fish in the world.

My son got the tank from his dad after he moved interstate a few years back and it's only recently that I have taken an interest... Our fish have been through some serious **** over the years, 90% water changes and ph swings a plenty. Since I've taken an interest little while back I am reeeeeeeeeeally trying to get things right. It's trial and error but everything has gone well and I had no idea that the shark housed improperly. He is the last of the original fish that came with the tank... When we first got it we had a rainbow shark, a black tailed shark, 2 kissing gouramis, 1 black skirt tetras, 2 clown loaches and another fish but I can not recall what it was... It was pretty aggressive and territorial, siverish with a red belly so that might help someone to know what it is. Ohhh and a tiger barb...

None of the fish were bigger than your finger and they were all adults when we got them so over the years they've died. With a bit of knowledge about fish I have to now say it's certain to be caused from incorrect care and utter ignorance. The Loaches are meant to be a pretty big fish so I have read. My Fish shop guy also gave me some cotton looking stuff to put into my filter which is apparently supposed to help things along. I don't test my water for anything other than ph but I do have it tested for everything else weekly by taking a sample to our fish shop. It has been a week since the filter media was rinsed incorrectly but there are no changes yet but I was advised to test it again on saturday as it was tested yesterday (tuesday). From what I read our shark is pretty old so I don't think I'll be able to return him because he's gotta be close to the end of his years. I plan to buy a new tank VERY soon and rehouse all the fish we have.

Hi!

The silver fish with a red belly sounds like a red-bellied pirahna!
