Cut back on the amount of food you feed.
If you are feeding flake, the phosphates may be causing your algae bloom.

Three or four days of total black out along with reduction of food should get rid of it.

Not a lot.
It is mainly processed foods such as flakes or pellets.

okay, I am having green water problems in one of my tanks as well. Nothing has helped so far. I may lay off the flakes for a while and just give them the frozen food and see if that helps.

I have a green water problem as well for the second time. Last time I cut down the amount of food, changed the carbon filter only and turned lights off for 2 days, it cleared quickly. Now its done it again? All water tests are fine. Fish seem happy, it just looks terrible. I am now looking at moving my tank, it may be getting too much light. I will let you know if this works.
