Quote .. 'SO... we are thinking about pre cycling water in a holding tank with it's own bio filter and plants to cycle the ammonia, nitite into nitrate and use plants to use up the nitrate... or not since the show tank is lightly planted. "
I would be looking at installing a 5um and carbon filter in your house, you can get the ones that fit under your sink, from the levels you have given in your tap water I do not believe that your water is fit for human consumption. we have installed this type of filter, and now I can get the tap water add the salt let it mix then add it to the tank. And we now have great drinking water!

Okay, I have done it. I bought a 60 gallon tank with stand (thanks to catersun for finding it on c's list for me). It came with a filter but it is not of sufficient size for a 60 gallon tank and does not have a bio-wheel. So, I will be purchasing a new filter and light.
I solved my high nitrate problem. I had an algae bloom. That took the nitrates right down. Of course you can't see through the water for the algae. I just don't understand it, this tank has had crystal clear water up until a month ago. I didn't do anything different than I have ever done. It will be interesting to see how clear the water is once I get the algae cleared out.

Okay, the new 60 gal tank is set up and cycling. It looks very nice. The 58 gallon tank is very green cloudy with an ammonia level of 0.25 , nitrites are 0, nitrates are 20. What the heck am I doing wrong? We did a 15 gallon water change yesterday and the tank looks worse today. I am sooo confused. I don't know what to do at this point. I think I will cut back on feeding and see if that helps.

do you have fish in that tank?
you could move them to the new tank temporarily...and use some algae chemicals for a while...then switch them back, after water changes and extra carbon have removed the chemicals

I am planning on moving the fish from the 58 gallon to the 60 gallon once the water is cycled and safe. Then I was going to work on the water in the 58 gal. I am just stumped. I cannot find any articles that can explain this. The 58 gal. tank has been established for over a year with healthy fish and lots of live plants in it. I have had one algae bloom in the past that cleared as soon as I cut back on the amount of time the light was on. Right now, I only have the light on for a couple hours in the evening. There is light in the room but no direct sunlight on the tank.

I'm not seeing where anyone said anything about blue-green algae bloom.
If it is cyanobacteria, you want to deal with it as quickly as possible. It's nasty stuff.
