Are Additives Necessary?

Hi, I have a 15 gall. tank recently stocked with 10 Rummynose Tetras (I have a soft spot for them-don't know why) & within an hour of introducing them, their noses were brilliant red & tails bright black/white so hopefully they liked the conditions, because I read they are very sensitive at first.

I also have a 10 gall. tank with 7 Harlies & have been using GEO liquid mineral magic in this tank. Within an hr or 2 the water is clear again (it makes it very cloudy when added) which according to the instructions means the tank conditions must be quite stable/good.

Finally getting to my ? sorry & I would value any opinions - Do you think additives such as GEO liquid & similar products, Blackwater extract etc (which I was thinking of adding to the Rummynose tank) are really necessary or would they cause to many fluctuations & just a waste of money?

I have been keeping fish for a few yrs & only used tap water & wat.cond. - I don't use any chemicals to adjust PH as it causes too much instability (my tap water is approx. 7.4-7.6 & all my fish acclimitised very well to that) & my tanks have always been clear & haven't had any diseases as yet. Maybe I just answered my own ? He He!! and should just keep using plain old tap water. I do want my fish to be as happy as possible!

Thanks for any input

You answered your own question.

Dino and I use NO chemical additives to our 100 and something tanks. Straight tap water (we are on a well, so not even dechlor for us.) Fish stores will tell you anything and try to sell you fresh air if you would pay money for it, sadly. And that is only speaking of fishstores as a majority, I am sure there are some that are honest shops.
