Stocking opinion??

I have 9 tiger barbs that seem to be doing pretty well in my cycled 55 gallon tank. My plan from is to wait 2-3 weeks and I am thinking of stocking 5 zebra loaches. When those are settled in I am going whole hog and stocking 5 denisonii barbs. I've got quite a bit of filtration and water movement - would it be safe to add perhaps 8 zebra danios or other small top swimmers.

Looking for opinions, thanks.

Re: Stocking opinion??

My first question is, is your tank cycled?
My second is, what are denisonii barbs?

Re: Stocking opinion??

Yes - tank is cycled. I still plan to add slowly - seems like a prudent thing.

Denisonii Barbs are also called Rose Line Sharks - http://www.aquariumadvice.com/profiles/6_47_en.html

They have beautiful color and are very active fish. The only drawback is they are probably at least $29 in most LFS because there isn't much supply right now.

Re: Stocking opinion??

That's a gorgeous looking fish, I like it.

I think you are pushing your tank capacity with adding the danios (who swim in all the strata of your tank), given the 1" per gallon rule.

9 tiger barbs (x 2") = 18"
5 Zebra Loaches (x 4") = 20"
5 Denisonii barbs(x 6") = 30"
8 Zebra danios (x 2") = 16"

Re: Stocking opinion??

Now that I think about it a little more logically - and less with the new tank bug - I think you are correct about pushing and probably exceeding the aquarium limits. Probably best not to stock any of the top swimmers.

Where is everyone at on the fish/capacity scale? I know you can look at inches/gallon, or sq. inches/12 to get a rough number of fish. Just curious and I have an informal poll for everyone: are you over or under the capacity calculation for your tank? If so, by how much. Come clean!!

Yes, I saw the denisonii barbs in my LFS and I have been taken ever since. Beatiful colors and incredible level of activity and personality. That will be the last fish stocked - at $29 a pop, you want to make darn sure that everything is working properly.

If I have tiger barbs, zebra loaches, and denisonii barbs together that is going to be one seriously active fish tank!!

Re: Stocking opinion??

Right now, I'm WAY under. But, then...technically my 55 is still cycling. I had a major issue with my 10 gallon and had to put the rest of the 55 inhabitants to get rid of the 10 gallons issue. SO...technically, while not how I would have liked to do it, I have a functioning 55 gallong tank. I'm just watching for trouble now. I gave it a week, which is more than I can say for the 10 gallon, so...I'm hopeful. LOL

But, if follow the 1in/gallon rule, I'm sitting WAY under that now, while I was pushing overstock after my crawfishs last molt.

3 TB *2 = 6
1 Phantom Tetra *2 = 2
1 Crawfish *4 = 4

That's 2inchs too many...and trust me.....that caused me all kinds of issues. LOL As of this morning, water levels are normal, and everyone is still alive, including the extra 5 guppies I threw in the 55, since they were on sale, 5 for $5.

Right now, I'm about 3" over...But I do 30% water changes faithfully, weekly.

Re: Stocking opinion??

Right now I'm 1" over - the Silver Dollar species I have should top out at 4" in a tank. That is yet to be seen as most get much larger, there may someday be an issue.

I'm planning on adding a pair of Otos to help with the Algae - which will put me a little bit over, but I'm counting on them staying out of the way of the other fish as they are small and bottom dwelling types. I also faithfully maintain a 30% (or more) water change, and run two filters for 600 gph.

Re: Stocking opinion??

In my 2.5 gallon I have one male Betta, Mino. So that tank is fully stocked.

10 Gallon:

4 Mollies.

1 3 inch male molly
2 1.5 inch female mollys
1 1 inch female molly

Currently I am not overstocked. But depending on how large the females grow to be, I may be 1 or 2 inches over. My tank is completely cycled (it only took four weeks?) but the water parameters the last two days are completely in line with a cycled tank. Hopefully this means good things!
