i'm thinking of purchasing a 10 gallon tank off craigslist or something.
(MTS? yeah, i've got it)
anyway, i'm wondering if a school of 5 cherry barbs and a few red cherry shrimp would be ok in a 10 gallon planted tank?

I'd agree with Jaysee. It would be quite tight for them but yeah, as long as you keep up with your water changes, they should be fine. Try to gets some good plants for your RCS. They love natural aquascapes. If not, plastic/fake plants should do fine for cover.
