Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Can I have a gourami themed 40 gallon?

Hello Everyone!
I'm trying to set up a forty gallon aquarium and I would like it to be a gourami themed community, but I've run into a problem. I have a 4.5 in. male gold gourami that was already living in the tank. He was extremely peaceful with all his tankmates. I then tried placing in 2 female gold gourami into the tank and then he went berserk! He kept chasing them non stop and it was horrible. Since then, I've isolated him in a 20 gallon quarantine/hospital/jail tank. If I add more females, will he calm down, or will I have to choose between him and a gourami community?

From what I have read, Gourami's are great community fish, until you put more than one in the tank. They can be quite territorial, and one will bully the other if he comes into his territory.

I have 3 gouramis in my 125g but the plants reach the top so they have broken line of sight. I have 2 golds and 1 three spot and they get on fine. I think its about having enough spaces for territory and broken line of sight, also rearranging the tank ornaments breaks territories and can help with aggression.

I once heard that males are the more aggressive ones, so if I went with a sorority type of set up with four females, would that work in the tank if I adopted tall plants to break the line of sight? Also, so far the females do not seem aggressive to each other at all, just a little chase between them once in a while

After observing them for a while, one definitely seems more dominant over the other. If I choose to go with the females, would adding 2 more to bring the total up to 4 disperse the aggression?
