Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Can I get away with an addition to a goldfish tank?

I was thinking of a snail in particular. Not those tiny multi-breeding types that quickly overcomes an aquarium and become pests. But one cute snail ...maybe a trap door? Of course I wouldn't do this until my tank has fully cycled. Currently Amomia is 0.25 and no nitrates in sight. Molly my goldfish seems to be handling it well. She's still healthy and perky. Oh, I should point out I have a 15 gallon tank and one Black Moor fish. What do you guys think?

Snails don't really add much bioload at all. I think an apple snail (or 2) would be cute.

I have an apple snail in my tank and Charlie leaves him alone.

I agree with Apple snails! Some nerite snails would do good too!

I agree that a snail would be fine. Do you plan on moving Charlie to a larger tank? If so, then you could go with a 35 gallon or larger and get another fancy goldie for company, or even a few native minnow type fish. I have both Mosquito fish and American Flagfish in my pond with my goldies. If you wanted something like that, you could try a 40 gallon breeder tank and do two fancy goldies with 3 flagfish (1 male & 2 female) or 3-5 mosquito fish.

Above is a link concerning Trap Door Snails you may find helpful. I think one or two would do great with your gold fish.

I think you should def get a snail or half a dozen. I love them and if you are inclined to get one, you will too.
Make sure you have a decent pH before you do it though.
Have a grand day.

Thanks guys! I'm going to do it. Now I just have to wait for my tank to finish cycling. It feels like it's taking forever ...

You're right - I should have said Molly, not Charlie.

I guess that's what happens when you are trying to do seven things at once and make sense of all of them at the same time

I told him that you said to give him some frozen blood worms in apology. You are happily forgiven

Thank you - I hate it when fishies are mad at me. Mine will actually turn tail and splash me when they expect to fed and I'm trying to work in the pond.

hehehe Charlie isn't that bad yet but as soon as I walk by he starts frantically eating the bubbles on top of the tank hoping that they might be food
