| Stocking and decorating advice I have had my 29g tank for almost two years now. During that time I have had many fish (not all at the same time). A pair of angels passed away about a month apart, a gourami passed away, two corydora catfish passed away, and three black skirt tetras passed away. During all this, for the full two years, my five scissortail rasboras and one corydora catfish have not only survived, but thrived.
Now, I really want to put something else in the tank (mainly because the scissortails congregate at the surface and thus are hadly ever visible). Does anyone have any suggestions on one, two, or even three fish I can put with the scissortails that will be slightly active and get along well with them?
Also, the tank is looking pretty crappy these days. I had silk plants in the tank and they were getting scraggily so I threw them out and now find myself with a big gap in the middle. So please excuse the mess. Those bags of marbles sitting on top of the tank will be added to it during the next water change. |

| I was told by someone once that livebearers shouldn't be put with other fish, so I hadn't even considered molly's or platy's. Is it still advised not to mix the two together? (the two being live bearers and egg layers) |

| The only thing with putting the livebearers in that I can think of is that if they have babies and you don't pull them out the babies are likely to be eaten. |

| I've got platys with my egg layers. Most of the fry get eaten, but there are currently about 6 babies at different stages of development. |

| Two things.
First, I redecorated the tank. The picture is below.
Second, would adding 4 swordtails (1 male and 3 females) to the 29g be overstocking it? The tank already has 5 scissortail rasboras in it.
Thanks! |

| I wouldn't advise you buy 1 male and 3 females - the amount of babies you will get will be huge! Why not get 3-4 males? They won't breed like crazy, and, when kept without females they don't fight.
Agreed - Livebearers and Egg layers are totally safe together!
Personally, I'd try a few more corys to make your current cory happier - perhaps add 3 more corys and 1 male Swordtail?
Good luck... |

| Hello Jane. Your tank looks great! There is no reason you couldn't have egg layers and live bearers in the same tank. Fry are always at risk of being eaten in any tank. As for additional stocking, what are the 6 fry that are in the tank with the Rasboras? If they are smaller fish I don't see a reason why you couldn't have 4 swords.
Best of luck and keep us posted.
Ken I have moved your thread to the "aquarium stocking" section of the forum. Thanks!

| Everyone seems to have you covered on the stocking. For the decorations, you could have a small driftwood as a centerpiece to give it a bit of a natural look. Its like putting fake plants with something natural such as a driftwood. If not, you could get a deco building. Maybe a temple or a tower of some sort. Whatever you can find at your nearest LFS. Hope that helps on the deco section.
Hope to see photos of your 29g once everything's done. Good luck! |

Ken | I think it was another member who has the fry; jane's tank seems to only contain the 5 rasporas and 1 corydora, so it sounds like there is definitely room for the swordtails. I'd really recommend the cory additions, though. From what I've been reading (and what forum members always say) corydoras are much happier in schools.
And I really like the acuascaping you did - moving the plants really opened up the tank! Hmm, maybe you could try a sand substrate? I know corys love playing in the sand. That volcano thing is way too cool. Last edited by iloveengl; November 2nd, 2009 at 06:49 AM.

| Is it safe to assume a blood parrot would outgrow a 29g tank? |

| IMO, I think only one blood parrot would do in a 29g. Ask Ken for an opinion, he has quite a number of them in his 265g. |

| I have finally decided on 3 platys or 3 mollys and another cory cat. |

| Just wondering if that stock will work with two filters? A Marineland Penguin BioWheel 200 and a Top Fin 30.
It is overstocked, but it should have plenty of filtration. Perhaps 5 scissortails, 3 mollys, and 3 cory cats instead of 5 cory cats? |

How big are your S Rasboras? They are supposed to get quite big... |

| I think your tank looks good and far from crappy. |
