Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Hello, and Welcome!

The guideline is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water, that is based on Tetras. For bigger fish it's 3 inches per gallon of water I believe.

I love your stocking idea! But you need to up the Clowns to 3. They would be happier. They are a super sensitive fish prone to getting ICH easy if not cared for properly. I would do the drip method with them to acclimate to tank when and if you decide to get them. As for the Angelfish, they are sensitive to water quality, it's common for them to get fin rot due to their long fins but if cared for properly it wont be a problem. The only concern is they may or will pair off and then become more aggressive and territorial with each other. Getting all Angels the same size is importent. Both of these fish are better off in an established tank meaning older water. IMO As for the algae eatter, you don't need one until there is algae. You could do a Bristlenose pleco or two for an algae eatter along feeding him fresh veggies and adding bogwood to chew on. Loaches don't eat algae and I am not a Chinease Algae Eatter fan.

Hello Play. Hope you're doing well. I would be concerned about having more than 2 pair of Angels 2 males/2females. Normally I only suggest 1 pair Male/Female in a tank but with 125g I think you could have two. Also it would be best to add all of the Angels at the same time to help with territory issues. I'm sure we'll get some more thoughts on this. Remember they are cichlids and can be very territorial even more so at mating time.

I like the idea of adding more loaches as well. Too, I'm not a big fan of CAE's. I think you'd like the Pleco. If I'm not mistaking I think that Zebra Plecos can range in the hundreds of dollars each?? Bristle Nose Plecos are beautiful and you could have a pair of them.

You still have more stocking room

clown loaches need 3 as a minimum but they thrive with more buddies around 6 or 7. Just to let you know plecos give out huge bio loads not sure if bristle noses will since they're smaller than the average common pleco but after reading diff. threads plecos in general give more than usual bio load.

great suggestions from everyone !
I agree with ken on 4 angels unless you have a back up tank for the rest...they can be nawty buggers if they pair up...
clown loaches can get up to 12 inches (never had them but seen some that have ) but as aleskagirl & eiginh said, they prefer to be in larger schools to feel safe...carol has great experience with loaches and im sure she can give better advice..maybe a different kind of loach thats smaller so you can have a larger school? bn's would be great for that tank as well and they are just majestic (IMO) as well as dont get too large....

how about 2 angels, 2 blood red parrots, a smaller school of loach type, 2 firemouths, and a bn?

You could get a Clown Pleco, they are cool looking and stay small, but they do not eat alot of algea.

They are wood eaters so you would need some drift wood for them.

You could do loads of different fish in a tank that size. Firemouths should be fine.

Play, the Bloody Parrot Cichlids would more than likely eat fry as will Angels or any fish that would fit into their mouths. However, this is pretty much true for most all cichlids to my knowledge.

I'm not sure, but I'd imagine the Firemouth would eat the Kuhlis?

Hello Play...I see you're getting some good responses! I posted a link on the Bala Sharks for you to read and think about. How about 1 Red Tail or 1 Rainbow Shark (but not both)

Dojo loaches are a lot like kuhli's, only bigger. Kuhli's get to 3 inches while dojo's can get to 9.

check loaches.com
there's a whole list of them there. I agree too, the FM's would eat the loaches as they look like large worms

Shawnie is correct so don't fret over it too much until you have the tank. But it is good to have an idea of what you want. I really like my Rainbow Shark. He's a great addition to my tank. I would suggest that you add your shark last for territory reasons.

I really like the YoYo Loach, they grow to about 6". You could do a group of them and watch them interact with each other. They are playful. Like to hide. What do you have as a substrate? All Loaches prefer a sand, they like to sift through it and since they are scaless it's soft for them but you can use fine gravel.

I wouldn't go for the Common pleco. They don't really eat algae...they do for a short while but then they just get lazy and just produce lots of waste.

Instead of the Bala's you should look into a school of Silver Dollars instead. They are peaceful, omnivores and don't get huge like the Balas.

It's all up to you.

Look into Pictus Catfish....they are a fun active bottom dweller that don't get huge. You may be interested in the Jack Dempsey Cichlid....could add that with a Firemouth. Both the same size. Good Luck! Take your time......
