My First Tank

Hey fish people. I have acquired a 75gal aquarium. I've gone to a really cool website called www.aqadvisor.com and come up with a list of fish for a community tank I think will work. Here's a list of the fish I'd like to stock:
6x Skunk Cory's
1x Bristlenose Pleco
8x Cardinal Tetras
6x Oto's
2x Sparkling Gouramis
6x Kuhli Loaches
15ish Malaysian Trumpet Snails
15x Ghost Shrimp

I'd like to break up the tiny fish look with a larger fish if possible. Thus the knife fish and optional rasboras. Suggestions are welcome! I'm toying with the idea of a planted tank... I do not have a stand yet, so there's no rush on anything. I have pool filter sand for the substrate, would this be ok for my loaches to burrow in? It was only 14 bucks so I can switch if need be, but I would like to stick to sand.

that sand should work perfectly, i think theres actually a ton of people that use it (ill be switching to it soon myself!)

i dont know much about what you have listed, but it seems to be very 'bottom' oriented. the cory cats, loaches, pleco, and oto's will mostly all be hanging around the bottom i believe.

somebody with more knowledge will be right behind me hopefully, and welcome to fishlore!

1 angelfish would be a nice centerpiece fish.

Thanks for the input! On that website I mentioned, it says the angelfish is too big to live with a few of the other fish there. But with a 75g that shouldn't be a problem right?

I guess I didn't realize it was quite so bottom heavy. heh Perhaps I'll take out the corys and add something else. I'd prefer to stick with South American fish if I can. I realize the loaches are not, but they're sooo cool looking!

I'm trying to stay away from aggressive Cichlids, or Cichlids all together. But an Angelfish might work. What about a Ram? I've looked into Discus fish but they prefer a much higher temp than do the other fishies in my list, otherwise I'd get a couple of those.

you should think about getting guppies or platys. If you want a non-aggresive cichlid try a pair of kribs

I'd cross the black ghost knife off even the optional list. They're cool looking but get up to 20" long and will eat anything that fits in their mouth.

If it were me I'd get rid of the otos and get a blood parrot or a pair of German/Bolivian Rams.

I like how you are going to be adding plenty of snails, you sure are going for the natural waste removal. I would suggest bumping up the number of ghost shrimp to at least equal with snails as they tent to grab more of the crap the slower snails miss.

Thanks for the input. I don't like guppies, I've already decided I don't want a watery version of rabbits. I actually know nothing about shrimp/invertebrates and saw them on the list of that website and that they would work for my tank. So I threw them on there cause I think it'd be cool. I was also reading an article in a fish magazine that the bumblebee goby can be freshwater and I think I'm going to add one of those too.

"watery version of rabbits"

Welcome to Fishlore! I think the stocking plan looks great but I would add a few more Cardinal Tetras. They just look so good in bigger groups. Do yourself a favor though and quarantine fish before adding them. One bad apple spoils the whole bunch.

I am really thinking an Angelfish would be a nice addition as mentioned... But the the site I mentioned says that the Angel will be too aggressive for the cardinals. I'm not sure if I believe this or not.

Hi Congrats on the awesome tank. I really like most of your stocking ideas so far and I agree that choosing between cories and loaches is gonna be hard! They're both so cute .

I did want to mention though that bumblebee gobies are really a brackish water fish and will not live long healthy and happy lives in freshwater tanks. (I have these little dudes in my brackish tank so I most definitely understand their appeal!)

Edit: That site you mentioned is a work in progress. It's definitely not the definitive word. I'm sure some members who have angels will be by soon and be able to tell you more about them.
