Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Liven up my 26 gal bowfront

Hey, guys. I have a 26 gallon bowfront that currently houses
1 male powder blue dwarf garoumi
4 bloodfin tetras
1 rubberlip pleco

I was wanting to add some more fish and I'm looking for suggestions. I have been really into cichlids for a while and its been a long time since I've had a community tank. I was wanting something with a little personality. Feeding these guys is a bit lackluster after been greeted hungrily by my ravenous little killing machines.
I'm open to pretty much anything but guppies. (I'm not a fan.) Also, our water here is a bit on the alkaline side so I haven't had much luck with most tetras. Thanks!

Also, I love Angels but I'm thinking the tank is just too small for them.

How about a chanchito? I have a couple dozen ~1.5" juvies available, could ship you one Priority Mail for $20. The proper name is Australoheros oblongum. The males grow to about 5", females a little over 3". About the same size as convicts, but much better disposition in general. Mix pretty well with anything they can't eat IME, and thrive in hard, alkaline water. Here's a few pics of the parents.

I do have a few more pics of the juvies, but photobucket isn't cooperating for some reason.

They're lovely but I'm afraid my tetras may become a tasty, tasty snack.

I think a 26 limits you to dwarf cichlids, if you want to go the cichlid route.

Okay, I think there's been a misunderstanding. I don't want cichlids in this tank. Its a community tank with really shy fish in it right now that I don't want to get rid of. I'm just looking to add something maybe I haven't thought of. I all ready have a dwarf african cichlid tank. Thanks.

How about 10 cherry barbs. They'll look nice with the blue gourami and pull out the red in the bloodfins.

I was thinking that too. I kind of want one of the sunset dwarf gouramis but I'm afraid they'll fight in such a small tank.

Your fears are well founded

I'm hoping I can find some females, but they're hard to get ahold of where I live.

Impossible where I live. Even if you do, there may be some aggression issues in a tnk that size if there aren't enough hiding spots.

I like Tony's idea of the school of tetras and Cories. Good luck at whichever fish you choose Hope to see pics up soon.

So, I just brought home 3 of the cutest baby albino cory cats. They just got home and they're all ready cracking me up. I want to thank everyone for their input!

You know, some cherry barbs would bring out the red of the corys eyes
