Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

what size tank would you use for this stocking scheme?

Hi everyone!

I am in the planning process of setting up my first tank and doing as much research as I can. Having looked at the various "rules of thumb" calculations about how how many fish will fit in a particular tank I remain somewhat confused, so I thought I'd tackle it from the other end and try to figure out how much tank I need to comfortably house the fish I'd like to have.

This is what I would like to end up with in the duly cycled and established (planted) tank:

12 zebra danios
3 platys (1 male, 2 female)
12 cardinal tetra
12 black neon tetra
3 oto cats

So my question to you is this:
Given this stocking scheme, what is the minimum sized tank you would use for success?

Thanks very much for any and all suggestions!

I would say a 55, IMO.
That will give the different tetras room to school.

I'd say a 75 gal for extra room even if it's not completely stocked. Bigger the better. But in Amanda's opinion, a 55 gal would do nice too.

Welcome to FishLore!

Your stocking list looks fun. What a great way to start a tank. Figure out what you want then buy a tank that will accommodate the stock.
So many of of should have done it that way. lol

I like peacemaker's suggestion, then you could add to your stock in the future.

Best of luck!

Welcome to Fishlore Congratulations on doing your tank size homework first. You're off to a fantastic start!

IMO-55 minimum, but a 75 would be better.
