Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Stocking questions

Actually, its 38g. (36"x12" and 20" deep)

Current stock is in the signature:
5 Pristella Tetra
4 Cory
2 Pearl Gourami
1 SAE
1 Panchax
1 Clown Pleco

I would like to add some bosemani rainbows, and maybe some cherry barbs. I was hoping for opinions on how many I could get. I dont think I would want a group of either smaller than 3, and if push comes to shove id rather have the rainbows.

By the 1 inch of fish per gallon rule, I am already at my limit. However, looking at the tank it appears mostly empty. Half of the fish spend most of their time at the bottom (cory and pleco), the tetras are very small, and the panchax is glued to the top.

I think I will add 3 Bosemani Rainbows, replace one of my aquaclear 30's with a larger unit, and maintain weekly or biweekly water changes. With the amount of live plants in the tank, and the high filtration, I feel like this should be a maintainable system. I will get a test for the oxygen levels of the tank, and monitor those periodically along with the standard water parameters.

IMO, Boesemani, which can get 5" at maturity, really need a 48" long tank so they can swim comfortably.
Since your tank is 36" adding fish that grow over 3" would probably not allow them to live to their fullest potential.
But, that is my opinion and this is your choice, your tank and fish...

An alternative idea, how about adding more Pristellas to your heard. Small fish look nicer and feel more comfortable in larger schools of 6 or more.
So, more Pristella would add zip and action to the mid/ upper regions.

Or consider adding an opposing color of the Pristellas, a small fish like cherry barbs in a school of 6 or more, is a colorful option.

Adding/upgrading filtration is always a good thing.

btw, I clicked on your pict. of the tank in your sig, it's really nice! The gourami may be scaring the tetra and making them hide.
Remember, there's power in numbers for the little guys. I'll bet the tetra will come out more if they were a larger "school" or shoal.

Keep up the good work with your frequent water changes. Tank looks great.
