Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

New tank... when to add more fish?

Click the image to open in full size.Hi,

I just put my first fish in my newly cycled aquarium yesterday (cycled with safestart, "bio" gravel and used filter cartriges, shows 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 10 nitrate) and I am wondering how long I should wait before getting more fish? (I assume you're still supose to add a few at a time...)

Thanks!

Hi Kaligo,

You should of added all of the fish you wanted to keep and then added SafeStart. Slowly add fish every week or couple of weeks and your good to go Pictures would be nice!

usually about 2 weeks is good in between a newly cycled tank...and add slowly....depending on the size of your tank, you dont want to add huge bioload fish at once ....congrats!!!!!!

I took pics! But I don't know how to add them in a post :P lol. I'm planning on glass catfish and perhaps some type of loach, but I'm up in the air on what kind would be best suited. **Pic added to top**

which type of glass catfish? there are some that get 2-3 inches and some that get 6 inches...most cannot handle new tanks and need a more established tank of a few months old..and almost always need 5-7 of them to have a school to feel safe and live happy....what type of loach?

tank is coming along great!!

Pretty sure the glass cats I was looking at at LFS said 2-3 inches, and I'm not sure on the type of loach yet... any suggestions? I had heard that glass cats and some loaches as well were sensitive... so it might be a while yet before I can add those I guess, but I'm patient, lol.
