Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Blind Cave Fish... Tankmates?

I added the first fish to my new 30 gallon aquarium today... It's a blind cave tetra! (I got it at walmart-- although I know that's not a good place to buy fish and I never have before but it's the first time in a long, long time that I've seen a blind cave fish around here, he was all alone in with albino corys which apparently they thought he was, since that's what they rung him up as, lol) Anyway... I was reading the blind tetra profile on here and it says they are best kept in groups of 5 or more, and that they occasionally nip at tankmates... I'm planning on getting glass catfish eventually as well, will the tetra be ok with them? (they are also mid-level swimmers) Does anyone have experience with blind cave fish? How do they get along with community fish?

Thanks!

blind cave fish act very much the same way as tiger barbs, just as bold and aggressive, but with a (surprisingly) better sense of direction. don't add any more cave fish until you have an established school of catfish, let the cats get settled in, then you can bring in more cave fish to avoid a whole territoriality deal. Other suitable tankmates include other barbs, larger gouramis, danios, and larger tetras.

Those blind cave fish are worse than tiger barbs *L* Nasty nasty beasties. They attacked anything that moved in my old tank and they got sold off quick smart

Sounds good! I was planning on doing the school of cats next since for some reason BCF are hard to come by around here... Any suggestions on a type of loach that might go good with these two types in a 30 gal?

Smaller species like Zebra Loaches (candystripe loaches) or yo-yo loaches will work, as they only get to about 3"-4". But remember, they like to be in groups. Keep no less than 3.
