Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Pleco with cichlids?

Hi, I was having some trouble with algae in my aquariums. I keep the lights on only around 8 hours a day, but I still end up wiping off algae from my glass daily. I was wondering if there were any algae eating fish/creatures that I could stock which would survive with some rather large and fiesty cichlids (I keep pairs in separate tanks-2 red devils, 2 texas, 2 jaguars, and one divided tank with a flowerhorn and butterkoferi). I'd rather have a pleco that continues to eat algae in adulthood than one that only eats it as a juvinile. Would a bristlenose or bulldog pleco be ok?

i think a bristlenose might be a little bit small. I know the larger plecos are fine if they introduced into the tank as adults. Not sure how big a bulldog gets. If you want a fancy sorta pleco you can always go for a royal pleco.

there are a few members that have been successfull keeping plecos in their cichlid set ups. I would go with bigger ones though. Flowerhorns are pretty large ( not sure how big the jaguars and the texas's get) so i would go with something bigger. If you told us your aquarium size we might be able to give you suggestions on certain types of plecos that will do well in your aquarium.

Also, here is a very helpful website that has helped others, so it might help you.

good luck! this website has a lot of info on catfish ( plecos included)

The problem is simple; larger pleco's that would have a better chance of surviving with the cichlids don't eat algae. A bristlenose would be the best for that, but the red devils, jags, and butti would kill if not simply eat a small pleco. Mag floats are your best bet with those cichlids.

finding out why you have algae, would be best....direct sunlight hitting the tank? over feeding? tank maintenance schedule? are a few.....

You can definitely keep a pleco with your cichlids I've kept plecos with African Cichlids before and they were fine, I have a few plecos in each of my tanks with all types of South American fishes, and they don't seem to be fighting. I have some albino plecos, and some spotted plecos in my tanks.

Hi sprewel1612,

How are you doing?

Neji is totally correct, because I also have a Pleco with my Oscar, JD, Convict & they are perfectly fine with one another.

A pleco would be fine with jack dempsey, oscars, and cons.
With red devils, texas, jags, fh's, a pleco isn't going to last long in my opinion.

Figure out why you have to wipe the glass daily and fix that problem.
