Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Trying to decide what to get, plus overstocking question

I'm having a tough time deciding what to get for a 10 gallon tank. I was planning on 6 cardinal tetras, then 3 male guppies. Some have suggested get both, but there seems to be a bit of a question on if that would be overstocking the tank.

I have never owned either types of these fish, but both are nice looking and seem like they'd be enjoyable. Let's hear what yall have to say

Go both but make sure you maintain it well, w/c weekly and pristine water.

Here's a list from agabr123, it helped me out. Hopefully it'll help you out.

Thanks for the reply....according to agabr, I should just stick with the 3 guppies or the school of tetras. However, you (and a few others) seem to think 6 tetras + 3 guppies would be fine with frequent changes. I just don't want to over do anything and keep all the little guys alive, happy, and healthy

overstocking a 10 gal is going to be very hard to maintain...IMO you wont enjoy it as much as you will be spending more of your time doing water changes than watching the tank....I say go with the cardinals and some plants..maybe a few snails

You could also throw in a bunch of RCS and wood shrimps. They're really cool looking and kinda hilarious when they suddenly decide to zoom around.

Thanks for the info folks! And pardon the ignorance, but what exactly is RCS?

Red Cherry Shrimp. They'd be a good addittion with the cardinals, although I personally think 6 Cardinals and 3 Male Guppies would be fine.

Hello Rick. I like the idea of a species only tank. I would go for the 6 to 9 Cardinal Tetras and some snails also. Keep up with your water chemistry and water changes.
I hope you keep us posted on your progress.

Rick would you be so kind as to fill out your profile aquarium information for us please? It would be a big help.

I like shawnie and ilovee's stocking opinions. I'd get that too if I had a 10g, too bad I only have an 8g. LOL

You could also go with a betta? And have some snails with him or corycats if he's not so aggressive. Keep us posted in what you decide Best of luck!
