Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

what to add to this Walstad betta tank?

i have two 10 gallon Walstad tanks setup, each has one single betta. one of the betta's has lived in a community tank successfully, the other likes to flare, so im worried about keeping anything with him.

im looking for a little bit more movement in the tanks, maybe even a clean-up crew of sorts. i was thinking about some sort of shrimp. if i went with shrimp, i would attempt to populate it well enough to form a colony.

anybody have any suggestions or thoughts on adding shrimp to the tanks?

btw, tanks have no filtration (i put in a tiny in-tank filter once in a while to circulate the water. the tanks are both heavily planted.

shrimp would be a snack..especially at molting time...so I wouldnt attempt them unless you are heavily planted...the betta that "has" lived in the community tank, how long has he been alone? he probably will not go back to playing nice once he had a taste of being by himself...so id be careful with him even tho he has been ok in the past...you could try some cories or ottos or even a snail...back up plans (tanks) with bettas is always needed as they are very unpredictable ..good luck!

They might look at shrimp as food if they are small enough but I have seen some betta's in 5 or less gals. stocked with ghost shrimps with no problems.

my betta boy was "good" in a community tank but i decided to give him his own 5G tank so i can get a gourami
he was alone for 6 months...then a few months ago i tried to put cherry shrimp in his tank it was a bad idea he harassed them non stop so i had to move them out ...
like shawnie said i think once they have their own tank for a long time they wont play nice anymore or aleast thats what happened to my boy :S

i would try tho if you have anouther tank to put them in if it doesnt work out. i love mine in my community tank!

worst case scenario i have a 14g with nothing but endlers in it, so anything i buy for one of the 10g can go into the 14g if the betta wont tolerate the addition.

if you guys think a cory cat would be a potential candidate i can pull some albinos from my 29g and put them in with the betta. how many cory cats should i put in to test it out the compatibility?

the 10g that has my veil-tail betta (hes the one that used to live in community) is super thick with plants. the other 10g has a crown-tail (flares at anything) has a little less plants, i can have his tank thickly planted (just need to trim my 29g up a little and transplant).
