Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

55 gal finished?

Hello! This is my 1st post, so here goes. a few months ago, I upgraded to a 55 gal. (present from my daughter) I want to make sure the stocking is ok - overstocked, room for a couple more or just right. Currently have:

2 dwarf gouromies
6 black phantom tetras
6 hi fin white tetras (blushing)
5 rummy nose
4 neons
4 silver hachets
2 platies
1 albino cory cat
1 spotted cat - 3"
1 yoyo loach

Thank you!!

Hi Debj! Welcome to FishLore.

Congrats on the recent tank. Tetras, including the rummy nose, neons, and hatchets live longer happier lives in schools of at least 6. Imho, choose fewer types of tetras so you can have more in each school. Cory cats similarly prefer schools. In order to get the school numbers, you may need to limit the types in the tank.

Two DG in a 55g makes me nervous. They're so darn territorial and it seems that many people have had aggression issues with them together, even in a 55g. I would really suggest just one, but others may feel differently on that one.

Best wishes to you and your fishies. I can't wait to see what you decide - others will be by soon with loads of good advice, too.

EDIT: OH! You've already stocked with all of these.... Hmmmmm...

Thanks for your input! There are so many cool looking fish, it was hard to decide (that's why the variety) The rummy nose school with the neons

As for the DG, each have made their spot, only chase each other once in awhile and don't bother the other fishes. They seem good.

Do you think I can add more fish? Thanks again!

Other tetras schooling with each other is pretty common especially when they're happy. I have my rummynose school with my neons and Glowlights.

About the DGs, I'd support ilovee on the aggression problem. It can be very risky and dangerous.

I think your stocking list has put your tank at a maximum stocked. So adding more fish could build problems. Is that list of fish what you have in the tank now or is it future plans?

Hello DebJ and Welcome to Fish Lore. Lots of good information and friendly people here. Your tank sounds amazing! Some great tips above.

Personally I would consider your 55g tank fully stocked with the fish you have mentioned in your list. As long as you keep an eye on your water chemistry and keep up with your regular water changes I think you will be fine.

A guide line for stocking small fish (and by no means is this written in stone) is 1" of adult size fish per gallon of water. Even though your a bit over this, as I mentioned, if you keep an eye on things I think you'll be fine.

Best of luck and I hope you can share some sometime.
Enjoy the site!

Yes, the list is what's in the tank now. (have told my d 'no more fish')

Do you think I should move any out? At this time, most are still small.

I think it might be for the best to move one of your dg out as they will run into problems as they grow.
