I successfully kept angels and dwarfs together for a long time

In a 36 gallon, I would go with a single angel and a pair of rams. Angels tend to get nasty when they are breeding, and in a 36 gallon there wouldn't be anywhere for the other fish to go. I would also add a school of cories and a school of tetras. Also, I don't know if you like them, but keyholes are great smaller SA cichlids. They aren't as brightly colored, but they make up for it with their behavior. They get along great with almost anything. Mine were my first cichlids and they are still some of my favorites
