Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

jack dempseys & Flowerhorns

I have become to really like these fish--they are soooo pretty ! I just got 2 new tanks: 55g & 65 g. The 65 gal will probably be for SW! The 55 I hope to rehome my african cichlids (juvies) to, they are currently in a 30 gal. I have 5 lake malawii's in there now plus a brashir (sp ?). I want to know if I will already be overstocked with what I have or if I could add a pair of either the JD's or FH's. I have extra tanks I can use if I need to. As of now I have a total of 5 tanks--3 are being used. The 65 gal is not set up yet as we are still researching sw for that tank. We have a 55g empty tank ready to begin cycling for africans who are in a 30 gal. So once they are rehomed that 30 gal will be empty. I have another 55 with 2 O's (baby) which will be rehomed in few months to larger tank. We have 10 gal with a betts who will stay there. My husband really wants a BGK--and I know they get big-but how fast do they grow? Would it be ok to home it in a 30 gal for a few months until we got bigger tank ? Or do they get really huge really fast ?

You are already overstocked. Flowerhorns need HUGE tanks as they get big & are very aggressive. They shouldn't be housed with anything else. A JD pair would need a 75 gal minimum.

I had a flowerhorn for a short time, and TRUST ME, you don't want to house them with other fish. Mine was the most aggressive fish I have ever seen. Its generally not a good idea to mix African and New World cichlids anyways.

I would dedicate your 55 gallon to Lake Malawai, and I'm sure it will be a beautiful set up. Are you planning on upgrading the tank for your oscars or finding another home for them? With frequent water changes, you could probably house one long term in the 55g.

A BGK wouldn't do well with African cichlids, but may do well in a community of semi aggressive fish. If you end up with an empty 55 gallon, and re-home the oscars, you could probably house the BGK, a Jack Dempsey, and maybe a Convict in the 55 gallon. I wouldn't get the BGK now though. I would wait until you have your other fish situated and make sure that you know where they all are going before you add to the number of fish that you have that are waiting for bigger tanks.

Yes the Oscars will be rehomes in a few months to a 150 gal. The africans will go in the 55 but I keep seeing all of these other fish that I really like and wel....I want some of everything ! LOL ! I just need to decide which fish I want most and make a plan. My husband already thinks I have too many tanks !!! LOL !

I was considering getting a flowerhorn for a while, but a 75 gal. with one fish wasn't doing much for me. lol
