Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

29g overstocked?

My 29g tank has
4 swordtails (1 male, 3 females)
7 neon tetras
2 coolie loaches
1 powder blue gourami

The tank is cycled. My filter is a fluval 304 good for up to 70g
I think. Is this too much? Could I get away with two more
coollies? Everyone in the tank seems happy. Only minor problem
is the other fish swarming the loaches sinking pellets. One of the
swordtails is pregnant if any fry survive there going in a ten gallon.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Isaac and Welcome to Fish Lore. I think you would be fine to add two more Coolies and then I would consider your tank stocked. The more filtration you have the better as long as your fish aren't being blown around the tank by the current. Keep an eye on your water chemistry, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, pH levels.

Hope you can share some photos with us sometime.
Have fun and enjoy the site. Best wishes for some healthy fry!

I got lucky and picked up the fluval 304 on craigslist for 50$.
So I ordered a spray bar. There is strong current but not enough
to toss them around. Some like to swim under the bar some stay out of the
direct current. I have another 29g to setup when I get some extra
money.

I would say the extra loaches are fine, they have a small bioload and help keep the tank clean by eating leftover food etc and I would love to see some photos!
