Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

My stupid angels Vs Bala Shark Vs ?

Hi all,

I have a new 180g tank cycling, in readiness for my current 40g occupants to move in. At the moment they drive me mental.

Angelfish #1 is 3cm
Angelfish #2 is 5cm
bala shark is 5cm
Also in the tank are 2 Bronze Cory juvi's who dont bother a soul.
And my precious common pleco juvi.

Is there any chance I can have;

8 Bleeding heart tetras,
8 Lemon tetras,
8 Emperor tetras,
8 Serpae tetras,
4 Black Phantom tetras,

I only got the Bala Shark because it seemed like the only thing capable of withstanding my nutty, always fighting angelfish and now I can see I have 3 completely, useless, uncompatable-with-anything-else fish.

I'm hoping that by having large shoals they might have safety in numbers?

Are you keeping the angels and bala ? both of which get along with allot of other fish..but in a 40g tank, that kinda hard for them to do so ...fighting between angels is either same sex species, or they are finding a pecking order...bala's dont usually pic on anything with the proper housing and more of their own.they are a schooling fish that like other bala's .......but also grow over 12 inches and need the horizontal swimming space ...

in the new tank, the tetras sound awesome with some plants would make a faboo tank....the angels could be nipped allot with them tho so not sure on their ability to withstand so many tetras...but others have kept them with angels when they all grow up together...good luck!

Oh, and I'd rather not have Gourami's because Angelfish #1 was bought home with one and he'd stalked it to death within 24 hours

Thanks Shawnie,
Yes, at the moment the angels and bala shark are in the 40g but they are still pretty small. That's why we got the 180gal so they can grow up happy :P My guess would be that they have both tried to claim the same territory in the small tank - which in the bigger tank shouldnt happen hopefully. And yes the Bala shark does like to keep to himself but most of the time he schools with Angelfish #2 because the smaller angel tends to avoid him (between fights. lol). I would not worry too much about the angelfish getting nipped because they are both quite dominant (and angelfish #2 successfully spent 4 weeks in my Cardinal/neon tetra tank). My only concern and reason for asking is do you think the tetras will be safe from the shark and 5cm angel? I've read that as long as they stay together they can often confuse bigger fish by darting in and out of each other.

angels are your biggest ricks with tetras ..they will eat them if they can catch them..and a bala will also.....and angels might be tank bosses now but tetras can be sneaky buggers...worst comes to worst, put your angels back in the 40 alone

I just want to type out a kind and soft notice: Here in Fishlore, we do not call any of our fish or any fish 'stupid'. All fish are unique in their own way and although they might not be smarter or nicer than the other, they are still fish and living creatures which we should take account and care for.

I know you're having trouble with your Angels. But that's their behavior. Shawnie has given some great advice above, so best of luck!

Also, if you want to have tetras, I'd advise having a tank just for your tetras. It would look great as they love to school and sometimes school altogether, not just their own kind. Example: Neons with Cardinals, or Glowlights with Rummynose. My Neons, Rummynoses, and Glowlights all school together in one group, it's beautiful!
