Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

46 Bow Front

I just got a 46 Bow Front + 2 Strip Lights + Stand valued at $400 but BigAl's sold it for $220

I was thinking about stocking it with gourami's this is my plan for now

2 Pearl Gouramis
3 Gold Gouramis
3 Dwarf Gourami
3 bala shark
1 Red Fin Shark

Or is that too much?

Bala Sharks tend to be a little too big. Maybe Raphaels sharks. They are about 3" and they clean the tanks and bottom.

I have to agree about not getting the bala shark.

Also, I think you ought to choose between the pearl gouramis and the golds. There is not enough room for 5 full sized gouramis, and the golds are likely to bully the pearls into a corner. Pearl gouramis are timid, docile fish, unlike most other gouramis. 3 dwarf gouramis - no way, unless you get honey gouramis. Honeys are like pearls - very peaceful. Dwarf gouramis can be very territorial and won't hesitate to let everyong know, particularly other dwarf gouramis. If you heavily plant your tank, breaking up the sightlines, you MIGHT be able to do 2. If you want more than 1, your far better off going with the honeys.

Problem with your origional stock list is that all those fish pretty much ocupy the same space. You need some bottom feeders for sure - there are any number of different corys that will work, as well as zebra, angelicus or kuhli loaches. I would also add a school of small tetras like von rios and some mild mannered barbs like cherry or golds.

2 pearls, 1 dwarf or 2-3 honeys, 7 cherry barbs, 7 von rios and 7 corys.

Great looking new tank. Can't wait to see you get pictures of it filled with gravel, plants, and fish! Jaysee recommended a nice stocking list there. I'm not sure what I can suggest. haha Keep us posted!

Best of luck!

Corys love fine sand right?

I was thinking about putting fine black sand.

Yeah. Cory's do love fine sand. If you get black, maybe getting a color of Cory's that is easy to see so you won't tire yourself looking for them incase of anything. haha Albino Cory's are nice I've had a couple of them before and they were awesomely cute!

Wow! Beautiful set up. Maybe adding a few more plants to provide more hiding places could help But it's up to you, just a suggestion I love that wall in the center, makes a good centerpiece. Well done!

Hello yganno. Beautiful tank! You've done well
I would advise against having more than one Gourami in your tank. You might be ok with 1 male and 1 female, but two of the same sex in the same tank could cause some major territorial issues.
Thanks for sharing your photos with us!

So i should only put 2 gouramis?

When I go to Big Al's I always see 3 different breeds of gouramis kept together and the get together fine.

Heres a picture update.

What ya guys think?
Cheers

You cannot rely on how fish are behaving while they're in the store tank.

Beautiful job on the tank! The ship looks great! If you can get a male and a female Gourami you will probably be ok. Just keep an eye open for aggression issues in case they turn out "not" to be a pair.
Best wishes!

Thanks

What about a whole different story? Cichlids?

You would be able to keep some SA cichlids in that tank.
An angel tank would look great! Or maybe a pair of Cons or Firemouths.

Convicts would NOTwork with this stock. I wouldn't do firemouths either.

I like african cichlids like the electric yellow lab and similar coloured fish, like nice bright bold 1 colour cichlids.

What are the dimensions of your tank? Africans need tanks at least 48" long. It's usually not recommended to put them in tanks less than 55 gallons, but you're kinda close, so tank dimensions would be a good way to see if Africans would be possible for your tank.

It's too small for africans, unfortunately. You could do a few south american cichlids, though, like Amanda suggested. Those would work well in there.

What pair of sa cichlids would work best?

Blue Ram's with Convicts or Rainbows?

How deep is the tank?

There are so many types of South American Cichlids that would do well in that tank, it would take forever to list them all. Convicts, kribs, apistogrammas are just a few. What species of SA cichlids are you interested in? That would help us get the list narrowed down a bit.

If you want gouramis then I would reccomend getting the pearls because they are more peaceful than the golds. You could keep a firemouth and a pair of gouramis in there. To get a pair of gold gouamis look at the dorsal fins. On the males the fins will be long and pointed. With the females they will be short and rounded. With pearls the male will be red Chested and the females will be less colorful
