55 gal suggestions

I currently have my fish separated into a few different tanks, but I plan on putting them all in a 55 gallon tank. I plan on providing lots of hiding places on the tank bottom, free space for swimming at the tank top, and some plants.

Here's what I have:
3 glofish
1 guppy (female)
1 peacock eel
1 red tail shark
1 African dwarf frog
2 mystery snails
Tons of MTS
Java moss, java fern, water sprite, wisteria, anubias mini

I will add more glofish so my 3 glofish stop bullying each other so much. I would like to add a betta, but I'm not sure if the eel would nip the long fins or if the betta will attack the brightly colored glofish.

I also want to add some red cherry shrimp, but I'm afraid the eel would make a meal out of them. A few months ago I had my peacock eel in the same tank with neon tetras and my African dwarf frog, and the eel didn't bully or nip at the others. My eel might be okay with shrimp, but I don't know.

Looking for suggestions on:
1. How many more glofish to add?
2. If peacock eel will get along with African dwarf frog and smaller fish like he did a few months ago
3. Could I add a betta?
4. Could I add shrimp?
5. What other options do I have?

I wouldn't add a betta. Bettas are best alone in their own tank or with some Corycats he wouldn't bother if he isn't TOO aggressive. I don't know much about your eel or Glofish but all I know is that it's best to not keep bettas in a community tank. Help will be on the way soon! Best of luck!

Okay, so a betta is out of the question. Maybe I could add some corycats. Hmmm...

I would add 3-6 more glofish...I wouldnt add the eel as he might have a snack some night if he can fit the fish in his mouth... and your froggie, who doesnt see very well, wouldnt get to eat his food with the eel or the cories...you can target feed him with the cories but id be scared of the eel getting all his food ...I think he will also snack on your shrimp...i agree on not adding the betta....it would be too stressful for him and maybe put a betta in one of your current tanks when you move the fish?

I think I'll get 4 or 5 more glofish. Since shrimp would be a bad choice, I think I'll just add more African dwarf frogs so my single frog won't be lonely. I really don't want to keep my peacock eel in a separate tank, so maybe I'll put him in the 55 gal tank but keep a really close eye on him for the first few days. He's been in a tank with small neon tetras and didn't bother them at all. I don't think his mouth is big enough to eat a glofish. His only food interest is the bloodworms I give him. If problems occur, I'll put him in a different tank.

55 gal plans:

1 African dwarf frog (+ 3 more?)
3 glofish (+ 5 more?)
1 guppy
1 redtail shark
1 peacock eel (he's still only 5 or 6" long)
2 mystery snails & MTS galore!

If my eel starts nipping at the fish, I could use a divider to make 2 sections. Put my eel and redtail shark in one section and the rest of the gang in the other section. I wonder if there are aquarium-safe mesh dividers to allow water flow throughout the tank?

Thanks for the suggestions and advise. You guys & gals are so helpful! I understand that having the fish with the eel is pretty risky, but I'll separate the eel as soon as possible if he becomes aggressive. I'm hoping that he will leave the fish alone like he has in the past.

I dont think the frogs will get much food with the eel...and an eel and rts on one side of a divided 55g , might be a war zone with each fish wanting his own space...

Good morning ChuckyDuck. You can find tank dividers usually at the fish store. Too, you can find mesh material for the same purpose in a lot of craft stores or even WalMart in the craft section, but I'm not sure if you can get a size to fit at WalMart but it would be a lot cheaper than the fish store plastic one.
Best of luck. Great information above.

So the tank divider idea is out. The eel can have his own tank if he picks on the fish. I'm not too worried about the eel stealing the frogs' food though. When I had the eel in the same tank with smaller fish and a frog, everyone got their share of food. The eel ate freeze dried bloodworms in a floating feeding ring at the surface. The fish ate flakes from a different feeding ring and sometimes stole a few bloodworms. The frog ate his sinking pellets in the bottom corner of the tank as soon as he heard me tap the turkey baster against the tank wall. The different feeding stations method should work as long the new frogs learn to go to their feeding corner when they hear the tapping.

Sorry that I'm being so stubborn about having the eel in the same tank as the others. It's just that my eel is my favorite fish buddy. Plus, having one large tank is less expensive and less of a hassle than having numerous tanks. It would also save some apartment space too. But if the eel causes problems, he'll get his own tank.

No need for apologies -- we all have our favorites that we work around. That feed station idea sounds like it might work well.

I noticed that you feed freeze dried worms. Have you ever tried frozen? Just MHO, but they're not really any additional work, not much more cost (because one package lasts so long), and you don't run the risk of bloating and constipation that freeze dried so often causes, especially in ADFs.

Another thought I had... I recently had my little ADF pass away because of chytrid fungus (extremely common, contagious, and deadly frog fungus). Please quarantine ANY new frogs. I'll update with some info when I find the link.
EDIT: Here's that link: Chytrid Fungus in ADF's and ACF's
I don't want to freak you out - I just don't want you to lose the little guys like I did.

GL with the new tank!
