Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Starting over...kinda lol

Hey Everyone! I have had my tank cycled for almost a year now, My tank consisted of 5 Tiger Barbs and 1 Rubber Nose Pleco. I recently gave my friend my tiger barbs and my pleco. So now I have a empty tank. I want to start a community tank and here is what i have come up with. let me know what yall think and any suggestions would be great!

Cardinal Teras (10)
(powder blue) Dwarf Gouramis (2or3)
Otocinclus Catfish (4or5)

Hi Spekbelly! Welcome to Fishlore.

Oooo how exciting! I love the tetras and the otos, especially since your tank has been long established. I've heard about aggression issues with multiple DGs, but maybe that will be less of a problem with a bigger tank. In any case, have fun with your new stocking plans! Are you thinking of any inverts? Cherry shrimp are quite pretty. Mystery snails are darn useful.

A school of 10 cardinals will be stunning!!!!...nice plants? and a fun piece of driftwood for them to dart thru and circle around?

Yea I was thinking about some Cherry shrimp or something like that later on, maybe a clam?

I have never attempted to do live plants but i do have well planted fake plants and fake driftwood.

welcome to fishlore!!!

I dont think you can go for more than 2 gourami's in a 29 gal..and then you might need a ton of hiding spots to be safe...a backup tank in case of an issue with them might also be needed...I LOVE teds idea of the cardinals with plants and driftwood..that would be amazing!

ottos would be a nice addition as well..but need the established tanks for sure...

I am worried about the fact that the tank is empty..how are you feeding it to keep the cycle alive? the bacteria will die without some type of ammonia source so making sure thats happening is a must....good luck and let us know what you decide!

Yea my LFS said there might be some problems with 2 or 3 gouramis and they said they might get along very well. but the question on feeding the tank now? I got a Powder Blue Dwarf Gouramis yesterday so i have him to feed

I had 3 dwarf gouramis in my 55 when I first started, and one eventually tortured the other to death. So just be careful with more than one.

in a 29 gal you could have an angel...2 if they are a pair(opposite sex) ..but with the tiger barbs, I wouldnt attempt it as they are notorious for nipping fins and angels fins are just too tempting in that small of a tank

Hmm... IMO, I'd go with the Cardinals and the Otos. That list sounds cool!

Good luck at whichever you choose!

Would the Cardinals and the Otos get along with Angels?

Keeping one Angel should be okay. If more than one, you might face aggression and territorial problems.

I think your Angel would do ok with Cardinals and Ottos. The real territorial issues will begin if you have more than 1 Angel of the same sex, or if you have a pair to spawn they will do everything they need to do to protect their egg/fry.
Best wishes!

Well it was Kinda a bad weekend, I went to my LFS and got 2 very pretty Angles. The ower of my LFS said they were male and female but it is still hard to tell when they are young. I guess luck was not on my side because i guess i got 2 males or 2 females and one killed the other the very first night. I called my LFS and he said he was very sorry what happened and he said he would give me another angle for free next time i come by. But my new marble angle is doing great and im thinking on waiting a few weeks befor i get anything else.

WHAT THE!? When I came home from work yesterday my Angle was fine and like 2 hours later I went to feed him and he was dead! Whats going on? I checked my water Tuesday night and everything was like it was suppose to be and after I discovered what happened to my angle I checked it again and everything was fine! I use a API master test kit so it is pretty accurate. There was no sign of disease that I could see. His belly was just a little bit bigger(not much at all). Can anyone help or suggestions on what might have happened?

What did the readings say? I read that you have to bang the nitrate bottles because it forms crystals when it's been sitting. When you emptied the tank how long did you keep it empty?
