Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

33 gal flatback hex

I really like pictus catfish, I was wondering if they would be suitable for a 33 gal tank? I read they need 20 gal, but they like to be kept with other pictus. So how many could I put in a 33 gal?

What would be some attractive looking tankmates?

Or should I just scrap the pictus idea?

I would rather have a couple nice sized fish rather than a bunch of small fish.

I currently have a couple full grown guppies, and 3 cory cats. If they would be an issue with pictus, I could give them to a friend who wants them. But wouldn't 2.5 in guppies be too big for a pictus to eat?

Or what would be a different stocking option for my tank? I rather like live plants, so I would want something that could live with plants and not destroy them.

With a 33 gallon you could possibly look at:
A pair of Kribenises chiclids (or German Blues, Bolivians)
2 Bristel-nosed plecos
7 Tiger Barbs (or other semi-agressive schooling fish)
Or you could use it as a guppy/sword tail/platy tank.

I saw bolivian rams at the pet store today, they were quite pretty, not too flashy though, but I rather liked them, they were kind of cute in a way. What are possible tank mates for them?

Bolivian rams-some of my favs-they're pretty peaceful. I have had trouble keeping more than one in the same tank without aggression. But to answer your question, they go well with any peaceful tetras, platys, mollies, corys, etc. Pretty much any peaceful tropical community fish.

Friendly advice-the lighter the substrate, the better they show their colors. My bolivian with black substrate turned very dark. My bolivian in my daughter's very bright tank looks like a typical bolivian, nice light colors, etc. Same temp, no ammonia, no nitrites, nitrates 5-20.
