Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

The Flying fox. Should I get one?

I was going for an all South american theme fish tank. here is what I have.

2 blue acaras
8 red eye tetras
1 medusa pleco
1 Bristle nose pleco

I have some plants and I am looking to get more. I have some algea I know getting a fish to clean it is not the cure I am working on fixing the problem but would like a good algae cleaner to keep it in check. I don't want Otts they always die and I have the Acaras who might try and eat them. I have my BN and he does a fine job cleaning the algae off the grass for some reason he only works over the glass not the rocks or wood. He is albino maybe thats why .

My LSF has some Flying foxs. Not the Ture SAE or the Fause but the fox. Turns out there are 3 of these fish that look almost identical. But I have been studieing them and it's the Fox that is at the store.

SO should I get one. Has one kept the Flying fox? If so how good are they at cleaning algae. I want them to clean my plants will they?

I had a flying fox one time, he was the size of a small oto when I first bought him and then he ate and grew and ate, ate and ate lol

He got so big and fat I called him "jabba the hut" hehe

let's just say he never helped clean my tank of it's algae, but he sure loved fish food and when they get older they get semi aggressive, he would fend off other fish from entering his hideout

I don't have a flying fox but I do have a rainbow shark that is closley related to them. Very territorial fish and aggresive during feeding. I think mine is more aggresive than m=normal but I don't think you should get one.

Well with lots of research I went and got one. He is tough and is not bothered by the spawning blue acaras. I need a fish that is not overly peacful. This fish has helped my acaras bound I was haveing problems with them turning on each other.

This fish is perfect for my tank let's see if he eats some algea.

Update Well he was great for when I had my Blue acaras spawning he made for a great Target fish. But I have split the pair up and well now the fish is just a pain he is very territorial since the pair has split up. He is still fine with the type of fish I have but I would rather have another cichlid then this guy.
