| Stocking a 14 gallon???? Hi-
I'm new to all this. I have a 14 gallon tank with 1 male betta, 4 platies, 5 neon tetras, 2 ADF, and 3 albino cories. Is my tank overstocked :; |

| I'm afraid so. Is there any way you could find new homes for some of them? That many fish in a 14 gallon will surely result in water quality issues.
Welcome to fl! |

| Welcome to Fishlore.
I'll second it being overstocked. It's easy to do though. there are so many awesome fish and we just want them all. lol. Do you have pics of your tank. We all love them.
I would be more concerned about compatibility issues then being overstocked though. Some of the fish and frogs you have in there aren't very good tank mates. Do you have an aggression issues with it so far? |

| I don't actually have all those fish yet, I only have a male betta and 2 platies. Could i get 3 more platies and like 3-5 albino cories along with 2 adf, or is that still overstocked? |

| Hi welcome to Fish lore
For a starter, It would be a good idea move the betta and ADF's (not both) into a 10g. (If they're getting along)
The frogs would have a tough time competing for food with the cories.
The other fish should be in at least a 30g tank. The cories would do better in that size tank than the frogs since they need to get up for and do better in tanks about 21" tall.
Good luck |

| I agree with lucy.
Im curious, how does the betta act toward the platies?
do they get along, or is there any chasing or nipping?
again, just curious. |

I'd skip the ADF's the cories will eat the food before the frog's know it's there and risk starving to death.
IMO the Betta should be moved into it's own heated, filtered, cycled 5-10g tank.
3 cories and 3-4 platys (no betta) would work fine in your tank. |

| My platies and betta are getting along fine. My betta, Jaws seems to enjoy the company of the two platies. He has gotten brighter in color and become more active since i added them. I really would like to get more platies and some cories. How many of each can i have in a 14 gallon tank? |

| Cories Hi-
Right now all I have in my 14 gallon tank is a male betta, Jaws, and 2 platies, Peach and Luigi. I want to add a couple albino cories to the mix. Can I add them, and if so how many I also want a couple more platies because Peach and Luigi are very playful. I know everyone is going to say that platies should not be with bettas, but they get along fine. Jaws even started losing his color when I seperated them for a few days.
Thanks
Hello Jaws. I merged your two threads since they are pretty much both concerning stocking your 14 g tank. Thanks!

at the maximum you could keep maybe 3-4 platies and 3-4 cories, but Im not too certain with bioloads and such, someone else could prob give you a better suggestion of the amount.
But its probably a good idea to move the betta to its own aquarium. Ive heard some not nice stories about bettas that lived peacefully in a community tank for a real long time, but then out of the blue kill all the other inhabitants.
I'd hate to here about something like that happening. |

| Good morning. A good rule of thumb for smaller tanks is the 1" of fish per gallon rule. (this can be a bit flexible) taking into consideration the "adult" size. So for your 14g tank I would consider adding 2 or 3 albino cory's (they like to be kept in schools) and you would be stocked. If you have sufficient filtration then you could possibly add 2 more platy's.
Too, I suggest a back up plan to house your Beta should things make a turn for the worse.
Good luck with your tank. Hope you can share some pictures soon.

| Ok. I'll buy a small aquarium for my betta. Right now I have a 1 gallon filtered tank for a rescued betta. It costs 10.36 at walmart. My room stays at about 75 F all day. Can I buy another one for my other betta, or should I save up for a three gallon? |

| I have an aquaclear 5-15 gallon power filter in my tank. Is that good enough to keep my tank clean with 3 cories, 3 platies, and a betta, or should I get less fish? |

| I disagree. Those platies are going to start breeding like crazy and the tank will be overstocked before you know it.
As for the betta, it really doesn't belong in a 1 gallon tank. I'd suggest saving for the 3 gallon, although a 5 gallon would be better. |

| It would be a good idea to save up get two 3 gallons. 1g isn't really a proper home for a betta.
Walmart has 3g tanks for about $20.00. |

| Hello Jaws. It might be a good idea to upgrade to the Aqua Clear ( AC) 30 for 150gph. The more filtration you have the better, as long as your fish aren't being blown around the tank by the current. Something to remember when it comes to selecting a filter is: the filtration should be 8 to 10 x the volume of your tank. 15g x 8 = 120gph or 15g x 10 = 150gph. Have fun and keep us posted.

| Ok. So.... I need to get two three gallon tanks for my bettas. Could I just buy a 5 gallon aquarium kit for like 30.00 and put a divider in it If I get more platies I could get only males and give my female to my friend with a 150 gallon community tank. For now, I want to just keep two platies and my betta in the 14 gallon. |

| You could divide a 5g, but really IMO 5g should be the minimum for a betta. |

| OK. Can someone give me a good stocking list for a 14 gallon tropical communty tank that includes a male betta and 2 platies ? I will go with whatever sounds best. Jaws is pretty calm and he doesn't even bother feeder guppies. All bettas have different personalities and I think he is just really friendly. On August fifteenth I will be near a petco, so I can get the fish then. My tank is already cycled. Oh, and please no glofish. They are way to expensive and I don't agree with the way they get their color. Last edited by aquarist48; August 8th, 2009 at 05:00 AM.

| Stocking suggestions were given to you in this thread: Cories
Since your platy just had fry, you really need to keep that in mind. You'll have too many very soon. |

| My platies haven't had fry yet. When they do, I have a feeling that not very many will make it. I have a friend who breeds platies and will take them from me. How does this sound for stocking? 3 albino cories, 2 platies, 1 betta, and 2 cherry shrimp in a 14 gallon? |

| Ahem, you know where I think the betta should be. lol
But....as far as that many fish, I think that's fine. There's a good chance the betta will view the shrimp as food. I feed mine frozen brine shrimp and they love it. |

| Sorry, I didn't remember i already posted that. For now I am keeping Jaws in the community tank, but as soon as I can afford it I will buy a 5 gallon kit and put him and maybe a few shrimp in it |

| Stocking my 14 gallon??? Ok. I still haven't decided on stocking for my 14 gallon. I would like to include glowlight tetras and albino cory cats in the stocking. I already have 3 platies and a male betta in my tank. I ahve an aquaclear 5-15 gallon power filter in my tank, and every other day I change 1-2 gallons of water. Could I have glowlight tetras and Albino Cories, or then would my tank be overstocked? Last edited by aquarist48; August 8th, 2009 at 05:02 AM.

Please stick to one thread for a question. It's much easier for the members to see what's been suggested and for you to keep track of the suggestions.
