Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Ghost tank?

In a few months we were thinking about setting up a tank for our kids. My daughter loves skeletons and pirate stuff... so I was thinking a haunted pirate ship theme would be fun for a kids room.

She really likes the ghost/glass catfish... my question is can you keep these with ghost shrimp?

Any other ideas for other possible ghostly fish for the theme that are compatable?

You can keep the glass cats and ghost shrimp in the same environment. How big is this tank going to be? i could help with a stocking scheme if i get the tank volume.

We don't have a tank yet... probably a 20 gallon. It kind of depends on what comes our way.

I just read a story where a lady kept 9 glass cats with "several" ghost shrimp in a 20 gallon.
Be sure to have plants and hiding places for the shrimp to be protected in while they molt.

It will be interesting to see what other "ghostly" critters are suggested for your tank.

What about pristella tetras? They're also called x-ray tetras.

i personally don't think the pristellas are very "X-Ray"-ish. They are more yellow then they are transparent.

Indian Glass fish are not so common, but they are see through. You should do research prior to buying this fish, as they can be touchy at times when it comes to water quality. I think those are all the "Swimming Skeletons" I know of.

Not the theme I would choose but hey if that's what they like lol. I bet you could create a really cool tank. What about black gravel and a glow in the dark skull? I don't know if there is an aquarium safe glow in the dark tank decoration but it would be neat.

What are those tetras that are clear with a black line running down their side, they're sorta ghostish. They do make glo in the dark plants that are safe and the idea is very good.

My LFS sells glow in the dark aquarium plants. The one we have is rubber like..very soft, but looks really cool. Also you can buy glow in the dark paint for the outside back of the tank..that would be cool looking.

Glowlights might be a good idea. That strip really glows, looks pretty cool.

Thanks for all the cool ideas...

Like I said I'm not planning on setting up the tank for at least a couple of months. I still need to find the right tank and start shopping around for stuff. I will keep you guys posted... and if anyone else thinks of cool fish or decor ideas... I look forward to reading them.

Remember, pristella tetras are also available in a gold variety (selective breeding rather than dyeing is responsible for this). Maybe you saw the gold ones? The regular pristellas are kinda transparent IMO... might be a good choice, as they are a hardy, active species.
