Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

What is involved in "trading spaces (tanks)"?

I recently lost the 2 smallest goldies in my 55g, so I'm left with just 2 (a 3-4" fantail and a 2-2.5" oranda). Since there are just the 2 of them, I'm thinking about swapping tank inhabitants with my 29g. Then I'd have a 29g goldie tank and a 55g community tank.

Should I do it? Or should I stick with the whole big-goldie-tank idea just a little longer? I haven't had very good luck with them. The 2 biggest things I'm worried about are upsetting the eco-system of the community when I move them to the 55g, because everything in their current tank is going SUPER right now. The other big worry I have is that if the 2 goldies I lost died from some illness, I don't want my whole community picking it up.

Also, what kind of work is involved with switching tanks and how could I prevent a mini-cycle?

Perhaps wait a while( a few weeks) to be hundred percent sure that the illness is gone. It is your choice as to whether you want to swop or not?

If all is well, I would leave it be. Maybe yet a couple more goldies for your 55g I swapped tanks a couple months ago and it was a BIG headache. I wouldn't do it unless you absolutely needed to. If you do decide to do it, keeping the filters running on a rubbermaid tub of tank water and fish while you do the transfer should keep your cycle intact
