It does exceed the "
inch per gallon" rule, but I've always had luck with slight overcrowding
as long as the tank was well planted and had small, frequent water changes. I've never had discus, though, so I don't know their temperment beyond what I've read, so I'll let others comment on behavior. (Obviously, even perfect water quality, should you maintain it, will mean nothing in the long run if the space issue leads to stressed fish; maybe add the new fish slowly, over a series of weeks, and observe everyone's behavior to watch for stress/anxiety before getting all 20? Would you consider a smaller school, to play it safe? Maybe 7-10? Or you could start w/ 6, and if/when you need to replace fish over time, replace each deceased tetra or cory w/ a runny nose, until you even out the size of the schools, which I assume was your initial goal?)
