Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Convicts or Jewels?

Since I combined my 29's into the 55, I now have an empty 29.

I either want a pair of convicts or a pair of jewels. I love the personality of the convicts (thanks to Karma), but I really like the beauty of the jewels.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Not quite edit, but change of plans.

Due to stocking changes in a different tank, I'm thinking a pair of jewels for this 29.

Would this be overstocked?

Jewels will work in a 29 Bolivianbaby.
Just remember they are a pretty nasty little fish, in my experience, I had them about 5 years ago and some of them were just down right nasty.
Get them small and let them pair on their own, if you try and find 2 mature fish that haven't paired up on their own, I wouldn't be surprised if you end up with one fish.
Good luck!

ENABLER! ENABLER

Would one jewel be okay by itself? I definitely don't want a massacre. I just want a happy jewel tank, whether it be one or two.

They are a cool fish, one thing though they may not color up nicely with nothing else in the tank.....

I just put these in another post, ever thought about them.
Steatocranus Casuarius, a really cool fish.

Aw jeez, maybe I need to wait on the jewels until I have more experience so I know I can get a pair with no violence.

Maybe I can just put the jelly bean cons in the 29 by themselves and do the JD in the 55 with the RTS. I'm so confused. At least I wont' be stocking it for a few weeks. That'll give some time to figure this out.

I looked at the Buffalo Cichlid-he's not my type. The blue is a very pretty color, but the head isn't very appealing to me. Thanks, though.

No worries good luck with what ever you pick.

Jewels are one of the nastier cichlids I have kept for their size. Although a nice looking one I will probably never do them again.

I would choose jewels over Cons, just because if you get a pair, you could actually get $$ for the fry - unlike Cons.
