Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

55 gal blue acara tank

I have a pair of blue acaras. I want to add a firemouth and my other male BA to the tank. What do you think?

It depends. How big is the pair and HO big is the extra male? I think you would have better luck with adding an extra female but it could work either way.
How you set up your tank will determine if it will work or not if you ask me. You will need to set up different areas/territories for the fish. Remember for most cichlid out of sight is out of mind, so make sure you break up the sight lines of the tank.

With the firemouth, who knows. I think firemouths and all Thorichthys species for that matter are pretty wimpy for a Central American cichlid. yes they flare their gills a lot and like to show off but in my experience they are more show than anything. Not to say they aren't tough, but most is for show if you ask me. And your blue acaras are a pretty tough species, they can take quite a bit of aggression but in my opinion don't go around looking for trouble. i think it could work until the pair of blue acaras you now have decide to spawn then who knows. A 55 gallon tank should be big enough, but maybe have a back up plan if for some reason your pair decide to take over the whole tank when spawning.
