Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

New 50 gal, help stocking?

Alright, well I just purchased a 50 gal tank long and am now preparing to stock it. What I want to put in it is 1 kuhli loach, 1 pictus cat, 2 angelfish (preferrably same-sex rather than a mating pair, 1 swordtail, 3 rainbow fish and (perhaps) trying my more peaceful male betta in the tank along with them.

Does this seem like an ok tank set up?

Pictus like to be in groups of 3+. Angels are very hard to sex until they get older, so buying two of the same sex is hit or miss. Bettas & Angels don't tend to get along too well, as they both have long fins.

I think your betta is best left out of the setup. I'd worry that his fins will get shredded by the angels. He may also be stressed by the activity level of the other fish, especially the rainbows. I think bettas do better in smaller tanks overall.

You have enough room to keep a group of kuhlis, and they would prefer that. You could easily keep 4-5. The pictus might be a problem as it grows larger, but I've never kept one so I won't try to comment on that. I wouldn't try it, but hopefully someone else can help out there.

What type of rainbows are you looking at? I'd suggest upping their numbers regardless. If you don't get the pictus you can add a few more. If you want larger species like boesemanis or Australians, I'd go with 5-6. If you're sticking to smaller ones like praecox (dwarf neon), you could keep as many as 10. Hope this helps.

I agree with the betta and angels. My angel kept on chasing my betta around because of the long fins. And on other times my betta tries to pick on the angels.

Almost everything is good. Just on a few things.

Betta + Angel = fish fight (they bite long fins so that would mean that they will fight a lot) and your betta is peaceful. Chances are the angels or angel will be able to take advantage of his gentleness and peacefulness and kill the betta.

Sword tail fishes like salty waters (waters with a lot of salinity in them) so I don't know if they will be able to last long in just pure fresh water. But I don't know all of it I just know that I raised Guppies and Swords before, and they died because there wasn't enough salt in the tank after a few weeks.

swords will be fine in FW...not many of the fish we buy now a days, are use to salt and it acts more of an irritant than a healer....it makes them continually produce slime coat which isnt good....

Really? My local pet store says that Slime Coat is really good for the fishes. It prevents Ick from growing onto them.

Fish_wise_man, you misunderstood what Shawnie said.
She didn't say the slime coat was bad, she said to force a fish to continually produce it through the use of salt is bad.

We have 5 Boesemani Rainbows, and 2 swordtails in it now. Its cycled so we're thinking about adding a cat and 3 angles. Any cool cat ideas?
